In this technology, very low voltage induces an electrical current that initiates precipitation and accretion of hard minerals (aragonite and calcite) on a metal in seawater. This technology has been discussed mainly for its biological value, while this paper wants to highlight also its engineering value as artificial reef material.

So 3D printing comes from an industry term called additive manufacturing. It's as simple as it sounds. It's literally adding and building layers on top of each other. So the printer will start layering the outline of the structure and will continue to build upon that. It layers it in hexagon shapes. The printer knows how it should interpret the design and how it should add the layers of material.

NOAA facilitates, leads, funds, and implements efforts to grow corals in protected conditions. We work with our partners to collect detached corals—whether broken fragments or fully-formed colonies—and grow them in dense coral nurseries. The corals are then reattached to reefs piece by piece with cement, zip ties, and nails.

More than 20 coral nurseries are active throughout the Caribbean. Each year, they provide more than 40,000 healthy corals for reef restoration throughout the region. Active reef restoration is relatively new in the Pacific Islands Region (Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa). Efforts are focused on working with local resource managers to develop restoration plans to increase capacity.

NOAA is also exploring the use of innovative techniques for growing and planting resilient, genetically diverse populations of key coral species that can adapt to evolving environmental conditions. A recent NOAA-commissioned study evaluates how novel interventions could accelerate natural evolution and buy coral reefs time to adapt while ocean conditions continue to change.

Re-Stocking Cultured Clownfish Into Reef Restoration Areas

Earlier this year, we started our exciting work with a trial of re-stocking the local reef with cultured clownfish from our breeding Centre in Les village, North Bali.

We selected five clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) and a single anemone for the trial. The anemone was placed on one of the artificial reefs. To prevent the anemone from crawling away, and the cultured fish being eaten by predators, the fishers placed a chicken cage over the artificial reef structure to protect the fish and the anemone.

after 10 days of installation, it was clear that all of the clown fish have survived, and the anemone is getting bigger and is still inside the chicken cage. The plan is to conduct monthly monitoring to see if these good results will be maintained.
