Here Jean Valjean was basically saying that he went to an inn and other places and that they sent him away on account of his yellow passport. This shows honesty because if he was looking for a place to stay urgently he could've made up something so that he could be accepted into a place so that he could stay. Instead he told the truth and that is not something someone else had done. I remember a movie from disney that there was a new girl in a camp and that she literally told everyone that her mom and dad were super rich and she literally invented stories that were all fake just so that she could fit in. People actually started paying attention to her and later found out that all that she said was fake. No one really wanted to be her friend or take her in their room after that. Even Jean was shocked when he told him to take the candlesticks. I connect to this from my dad and basically his relationship with his brothers. He has 3 step brothers and 2 step sisters and when my grandmother was literally almost dyeing they didn’t care and they made my dad’s life impossible. My dad even bought her an oxygen tank by himself and they are very expensive and none of them helped him. One of them actually stole from my grandmother and that caused shock in my father. They really didn’t care about my dad nor my grandma. 1 of them actually told him that he was sorry and my dad didn’t hold his resentment and forgave him. Jean is basically remembering everything as if it were a slideshow of his past events. He does not want to be a person hiding behind a mask and does not anyone to think someone else is jean because he must face what he did not others. I remember that one time when my friends and I didn't treat a girl very well when we were about 9 years old. She all of a sudden became very sad and isolated and the teachers didn't know what was going on and everyone assumed they were her old friends who had done something to her when in reality I knew the truth. I remember knowing what I had done and that thought spinning over and over again in my head. I would get these thoughts in my mind that I had done something wrong and that they would only go away if I said something. One day I came forward and told my teacher what had happened, I actually got a minor punishment and I had never felt so relieved. I think that was very brave of him. Even though, probably one of the reasons was that he felt guilty that doesn't take away from the fact that he told the truth. That is something that takes courage and something that almost anyone would avoid. He owned up to his mistakes and that is something that is very brave. That is because anyone in his shoes that had become rich after doing that and he had even become a mayor would not have done what he did. This reminds me of a movie that we watched in 8th grade and it was of a man named John Proctor and he turned himself in for his affair with a little girl. He believed that, that mistake damaged him in the eye of God and he also cheated on his wife.
