First grade students used QR codes to research penguins. They were working with a small group and specifically looking for facts about the habitat, behavior, predators, and needs.
The next day students were asked to read about Penguins in an assigned collection on Epic! and take notes about penguins and the new learning they were finding. Students used Pic-collage to create a collage (or some used a single picture) and typed their own caption about the picture. Students then took the picture and put it in ChatterPix so they could read their caption. The final product was smashed into Seesaw so students and parents could see the great thinking and fact finding we were doing during our independent reading time

Within the compare and contrast, students had to identify the mood, tone, structure, craft moves, point of view, as well what information was in one or both of the articles. Students used a graphic organizer to keep track of all of their information..

5th grade students engaged in an activity in which they were analyzing the artwork of contemporary portraiture artist Kehinde Wiley. The students were given a Wiley portrait as well as the matching famous European piece in which Wiley’s painting is modeled after. The students worked together as tables to analyze a total of 18 pieces of art (1 set per 9 tables). The students were looking for similarities and differences between the two pieces of art. After about 5 minutes of discussion and note taking as a table the students had to select one person in their group to share with the rest of the class their findings. The students had to provide evidence for their claims they were making by being specific with their responses, referring to areas in the artwork that support their claim. After this opening activity students will then create a self portrait and a background using symbols that describe themselves in a pattern to create a portrait in the style of Kehinde Wiley.
