Unarguably, Caribbean Civilization aka FOUN 1101 was one of the classes that gave students a definite eyeopener into their often misunderstood pasts. This course has challenged all that we have learnt about our own history and caused us to see that what we were taught when we were younger was what the colonizers wanted us to know. Myths were uncovered and clarified and the knowledge we now walk away with is so much more vast. We learnt that the Caribbean is such a diverse place with a mixture of rich cultures that should be celebrated and kept and cherished so that we can make our own 'NEW WORLD' and not just be the remnants of colonization. So in this project, our group members collectively decided that we do not want to be just remnants of our past, but we want to embrace it for the good that it has brought to our spectacular Caribbean. We want to laugh, sing, jump, skip and have fun with our various cultures and traditions, So through this portfolio assignment, we celebrate culture, we celebrate diversity, our way of life, our foods, our games and most importantly, we celebrate OUR CARIBBEAN. As we learn from each other, we hope that you too may learn to embrace not just your culture, but the various cultures of the Caribbean and allow the Caribbean to be unified once again. Enjoy!

We all know that the majority of these tweets are ones that we can relate to. Being Caribbean is not just limited to one island, or being from Jamaica as people in the United States seem to think. Most of the islands have a lot in common but we just do not know other peoples culture. With these tweets, it is our intention to show that what we have is unique to the Caribbean and it helps to form our cultural identity as we learnt about in one of the lectures in FOUN 1101 this semester.

Although some of the things these people were saying about their perceptions of the Caribbean are not related to the myths in the lecture, they still show how other people view the Caribbean. Our point of view that we are trying to portray in this project is intended to celebrate not the myths but the truths of our Caribbean. The part in this video that is really interesting is that they keep mentioning Rihanna as if that is all they know about the Caribbean and we as Caribbean people need to work together to correct things like this.

The history of The Bahamas Junkanoo
Legend has it that you haven't needed an excuse to party in The Bahamas for well over 500 years. But ask folks here at the top of the Caribbean how The Bahamas Junkanoo Tradition got started and they'll all tell you a different story; with many believing it was established by John Canoe, a legendary West African Prince, who outwitted the English and became a local hero; and others suspecting it comes from the French ‘gens inconnus,’ which translates as 'unknown' or 'masked people'.

The most popular belief, however, is that it developed from the days of slavery. The influx of Loyalists in the late 18th Century brought many enslaved people who were given three days off at Christmas, which they celebrated by singing and dancing in colourful masks, travelling from house to house, often on stilts. Junkanoo nearly vanished after slavery was abolished but the revival of the festival in The Bahamas now provides entertainment for many thousands.

Every year though, it is dedicated to somebody who either contributed to our community or to festival in some major way. Festival is celebrated in August as there are holidays of August Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But usually the whole month of August is filled with festivities.

August Monday is when the community comes together to view or participate in a big parade in Road Town and troupes show out in their various colours to celebrate emancipation which is seen in the video below.

Our festival is filled with music, food and dancing. Also in the video nearing the end are "Moka Jumbies" which are the people dancing on tall stilts. The festival committee usually organizes Festival Village which is the one time per year that we in the BVI experience our own coney island, there are rides, they put together a show and there are booths selling food and drinks. Everybody goes and has a wonderful time celebrating our culture.

The jovial spirit of the Caribbean is constantly expressed through our upbeat music and numerous festivals. One of these festivals is Junkanoo, which is celebrated in The Bahamas. Many have attempted to find the sole origin of Junkanoo, but history mentions many stories, events and notable characters as contributors to the colorful festival. So far, the only certainty we know is that whenever slaves were given free time, they didn’t hesitate to shake cowbells, beat goat-skinned drums and don animal furs all in the spirit of celebration.

Like all things, time brought on changes and Bahamians began constructing their own elaborate costumes in preparation for the highly anticipated competition that modern Junkanoo has become. In addition to massive costumes, actual wind and percussion instruments have been added to enhance the original instruments of our ancestors. Dancers now practiced for hours throughout the week to perfect long choreographies in order to execute a flawless performance for the nation every Christmas and Boxing Day.

Most recently, Junkanoo Carnival has been introduced in the Bahamas to offer a blend of the best features each festival has to offer. This shows the attempt to integrate other Caribbean cultures into Bahamian culture and thus, build a sense of unity between all islands.

One of the most memorable lessons from Caribbean civilizations is that the culture in each Caribbean civilization is subject to change in order to adapt to advancements in the modern world.

This summer festival is the most colorful and popular of the summer season in Barbados as it originates from the 1780's, a time where the was the largest producer of sugar. The celebration marks the end of a sugar season and another successful sugar cane harvest. I for one, have spent time at this wonderful festival and be able to experience the Grand Kadooment parade and admire the large bands with members dressed in the fantastic costumes which depict a number of themes. Here is a video as revelers make their way to Spring Garden whilst Bajan calypso music is played as Designers of the costumes compete for the Designer of the Year prize. Early Crop Over celebrations took place on plantations or groups of plantations and were concentrated on the mill yard.
The harvested cane was brought to the mill yard by animal-drawn carts which were decorated with branches and flowers, such as hibiscus, bougainvillea and oleander. The very last cart carried 'Mr.Harding' an effigy made of cane trash and stuff, it symbolized the period between sugar crops when employment was difficult. A Bajan at that time might have been a sugar curer in crop time and a carpenter in hard times.
Food was also important as a number of animals were slaughtered, so there was alot of meat, which was made into stews, pudding and souse and roast pork. There were fragrant pots of peas and rice, as well as coconut bread and pone.
The festival dwindled around the 1940's but did not die out entirely.

“How does the Oistins Fish Festival show diversity within the Caribbean?”

Firstly, this festival is only celebrated in Barbados while other festivals are celebrated in other islands of the Caribbean such as Junkanoo in The Bahamas. Secondly, as mentioned before the Tuk-band performs for the crowd at the festival. Tuk is considered to be folk music in Barbados which originated in the time of slavery. This form of music is specific to Barbados. In society today, the Tuk band is still very alive and goes around to communities around the time of crop over and other festivals such as Oistins Fish festivals performing for those in the communities encouraging feedback in the form or singing or dancing. This is used as a way to keep this rich culture alive in the island of Barbados.

Reference: https://repeatingislands.com/2009/05/19/barbados%E2%80%99-tuk-bands-and-traditional-costumes/
