The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury is a collection of short science fiction stories. Each story teaches the readers about technology and what it is doing to society. Furthermore, each work contains deep messages about humanity and why people act the way they do in disastrous situations.

The illustrated man is still typical high school canon. The work, as mentioned, is a sort of dystopian work in which people are controlled by their technology. The strangest aspect of this, is the fact that the work was created many years ago before the technology we have today. Because of this, the book only holds more merit. The work depicts people literally being slaves to their technology whether that be holographic rooms or deep space travel. Nothing ends well. This could lead into discussion about technology and its place in society. An end game assignment could be something such as a research paper about technology and whether it should be limited in schools and other topics of a similar nature.

Complexity of Substance.

This book does not tackle just one topic. Instead is covers a variety of topics that look into the human condition. Although the unifying factor for the work is technology and science fiction, the work deal with complex human emotion. For example one work entitled Kaleidoscope, is all about the dark side of humanity in times of danger. Several characters who were involved in a spacecraft accident all show their ugly side when they are near death. Instead of confiding in each other, the men all talk about their vices and how much they disliked each other. It shows topics about how in times of great stress, humans crack under pressure. It shows the dark side of humanity. In The
Veltd, The reader sees how technology controls people as children literally murder their parents in order to keep their beloved video room. Bradbury was never afraid to be dark. This is important to high school readers. Students have already seen things such as Romeo & Juliet in which not everything is sunshine and daisies. The book looks into the dark side of humanity. This topic is complex as it is real. Students need to understand the inner workings of people and what struggle looks like. Because of this, the work is excellent for students to read and they are able to discover themes that are somewhat unfamiliar to them.

Again, On the topic of substance, The work also has the message that the human body holds a story. Each person is unique to themselves. Through our journey on this earth, we experience many different stories and are bodies holster these stories. Because of this, the Illustrated man has moving tattoos. His tattoos are a physical representation of the fact that every human has a story. This is a very complicated theme and yet the depiction of this idea is so concrete. Here is a brief excerpt from the film depicting this message.

Short stories are a beautiful art form that are often overlooked. A collection of short stories is useful because one primary factor. Short stories allow for a magnitude of ideas and themes to be explored in a short amount of time. Each story, although they share a unifying factor, have different themes and messages. What is nice about this is that different students can look into particular messages while other students read other short pieces and share out loud.

Well, Ray Bradbury is an excellent author who had suspicion of technology before its peak. He was a sort of cynical futurist. In other words, he welcomed technology with a open arms at first. However, as people rushed to own the newest fads in technology, he saw the rising issues. He saw a world that was more glued to their possessions than each other and the rest of humanity. Thus, he took to his writing to show a bleak future in which people lost a piece of who they were in exchange for cutting edge technology. Brads works were usually rather grim but they were very lively. Bradbury also used very down to earth language that is easily accessible for a large range of readers.
