My name is Tina Sparks, and I am in my last semester at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). My BFA senior exhibit is a collaborative quilt project, titled the Red Quilt Solidarity Project (#RQSP), focused on Missing/Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and global violence against women. I invite you to participate in this awareness initiative.  RQSP is open to all people who wish to speak out about violence against women.  

The quilts & panels will initially be displayed on the IAIA campus during the Red Shawl Solidarity Workshop, March 30 & 31, 2019, and also during the opening of the 2019 BFA Senior Exhibit, April 2019. These quilts & panels will also be installed in The Balzer Contemporary Edge Gallery July –mid-September, 2019, as a contemplative walking medicine hoop encouraging awareness of victims and their families. The long-term goal for the project is to transport and display the quilts/panels on the national mall in Washington, DC like the AIDS quilt in the 1980's, and possibly in local, national and international museums, galleries, art and community locations.  My goal is to see this project become a visual voice including presentations and rallies in order to evoke visibility, funding, and change.

As a result of that event, Sparks was invited and encouraged to attend senate committee meetings to advocate for MMIW bills being proposed. All three senate proposals that have been written to date have passed the committees and are on their way to the next level in the legislative process."
