As Mr. Luo said at the beginning of the article, "he has a right to choose a slow lifestyle of reading, exercising and doing odd jobs to get by..." Mr. Lou's original statement shows that there is not supposed to be a definite plan for the "slow lifestyle". I think it is important to remember as a student because often times students will forget to relax and overload themselves with work and classes. Later, the writer of the article followed up on what the word "career" meant. She writes about PowerPoints and suits. This encourages a reader to think about what a career means to them. To me, the idea of a career is something that follows college, and something one's life is structured around. A career is also, in a sense, a guide AND a limiter to one's life. To me, having a career in finance would automatically discourage partaking in many forms of the arts. To me, a career in financing involves a life revolving around numbers, investing, clients, stocks, and every other thing a college finance major must do on a daily basis. Making money is neccesary, but not calling your work a career enables you to make money in your own way, which could even be lying flat.

Usually, people believe that people with more money or power feel more content at their jobs. This article disproves that common belief, while promoting self care. I feel that this idea that the author touches on is very important to me as a student. I believe that rest is as, or even more, important than work. If people take work in moderation and rest when necessary, they will be able to accomplish much more than before. The author strives to inform the general public, by sharing that discomfort in the workplace is more normal than what people would originally think.

Last year I was going through the process of applying to different of high schools, I was also trying to keep my grades up in school as well as study for testing. When I wasn't studying or doing homework, I was writing for my high school essay, or studying for standardized tests, doing clubs, or having test tutoring. This was very hard and by the end of the day I was exhausted. It wasn't until last year that I finally saw the beauty and privilege of good rest. I ended up sleeping in more, and doing more things for self care. People with these crazy long work weeks probably realize the importance and privilege of rest even more than me, and thats why they are laying flat.

By using the word altar, the author created a metaphor to show that humanity is frightened to appose societal norms in fear of being judged or ridiculed. An altar is a structure used as the focus for a religious ritual and can be a representation of a religion. Thus, the author is conveying that people view a career as a religion and blindly follow it just as some people blindly follow a religion. Religion is a powerful tool that can be manipulated in order to force people to do malicious acts due to people believing that their actions are just in accordance with their religious beliefs. Similarly, people blindly pursue a career due to society telling them that it is their sole option. This blind pursuit can have negative repercussions as having a career is draining and can force you to make sacrifices in order to allocate time for it. By reading, exercising, and doing odd jobs to get by, Mr. Lou is living within his own means and is able to pursue his own interests, while not having to work inhumane work hours. I believe that it is crucial that people are able to pursue what they are passionate about, and be able to support themselves, which is exactly what Mr. Lou is doing. This quote reminded me of my own life in a sense, and the life that I might consider having when I am older. Last year, I had several after school curriculars that I wanted to take part in. I could only choose a certain number of courses, and I had to balance them with school. I enjoy computer science, cello, and bass so I took those courses after school, while still maintaining my grades in the classroom. In this instance, I was able to complete my school work, while also pursuing other passions of mine. When I am an adult, I would consider finding a job that makes me enough money to live comfortably, but where I could also pursue what I am interested in away from work.
