Hoover was a main contributor to the GD because he isolated the US economy and put a lot of tariffs on imports and exports as well as increased taxes and cut off relations with other prominent nations. He scaled the economy down until the US was in the dumps.

The Federal Reserve also had sum to do wit it because at the time they were split into districts but all of the districts had opposing policies. In addition, in 1929, the FR increased interest rate (the cost of borrowing money). This only slowed down economic activity.

Bank failure (stock market crash) really did a toll on the US economy, as one might expect.

Droughts totally hurt farmers.

2.	How effective was the New Deal in solving the problems caused by the depression?

Created millions of jobs through public work projects. It eased the problems but it didn’t solve it. Unemployment rates were still high. Some people complained that there was a gap between rich and poor and also that Roosevelt doubled national debt. It was mainly trying to help people get through the great depression, but what really solved it was WWII because it created more industry jobs and gave people focus and purpose. In addition, by the end of the war the government was stronger and the economy was more balanced.

3.	How effective were governments of RB Bennett and Mackenzie King in dealing with the GD in Canada?

RB Bennett created labor camps in the 30’s but they sucked and nobody liked him. Then he plagiarized Roosevelt’s New Deal, giving maximum work hours, minimum wage and more. By that time, though, it was too late. He was replaced by McKenzie King.King was prime minister three times, twice before Bennett. He preserved unity between English and French populations in Canada. Created welfare programs to prevent homelessness and avoid poverty.

Brazil had to burn their coffee plants because they had too much. They began investing in steel mills, kind of kicking out rural workers. Farmers moved to the city because they had better chances of money. The demand market diversified, and Brazil began selling sugar as well. The government encouraged nationalist mentality to get through it.Chile was the worst effected because it was mostly agricultural and relied heavily on exports. They formed a socialist party. They then had a military in power, and they grew their consumer good market so they didn’t need to rely on agriculture so much. They built up their infrastructure as well, including creating better schools.

In the work place, African Americans were treated unfairly, often being the last to be hired but the first to be fired. They shifted from the republican side to the democratic side and voted FDR.Hispanics were often deported (13,000 in total during the GD). FSA (US Farm Security Administration) created jobs, especially in the railroad industries. Hispanics were segregated, if not lawfully then unlawfully but still supported by the public. They would be punished if they spoke Spanish in school.

Before the Depression, women were making equal right strides, but during the time they fell right back to where they started. They were accused of taking men’s jobs and would be sent back home. Even the richer women had to do their own house work instead of having maids. Women were almost banned from working places but that was deemed unconstitutional. If the husband were unemployed, then the wife would have to go for a low paying job.

The Great Depression inspired a new age of radio. FDR used it to communicate directly to the people through his "fire-side" chats. News stations could report easier and more effective than with newspapers. Kids got their entertainment through fictional radio shows. Little bit of everything for a little bit of everyone.
