By this, he realizes this is friend is in danger and goes out to save him regarding any fear of his own.

If there's nobody... who's as good as you are, then you've got to be serious about that." Throughout the book, Gene expresses feelings of jealousy toward Finny because of all his athletic achievements and because Gene thought Finny was out to sabotage his academics. Gene fails the test, and blames his failure on Finny for keeping him from studying. Gene starts to believe that Finny is out to set him back from academic success and Chet is ahead of Gene for first in the class. Gene begins to grow feelings of jealousy and resentment toward Finny because Finny is naturally an amazing athlete and he doesn't have to work as hard as Gene does to succeed. Eventually, Gene begins to overtake Chet, and decides that he can't keep hating Finny after the amazing summer they had. Finny asks Gene to watch their friends jump out of the tree to be part of the society, and he declines at first to keep studying. Finny confesses that he always thought Gene was naturally intelligent and didn't need to study, which leaves Gene taken aback. Finny tells Gene that he should stay if he feels he really needs to, but Gene regretfully decides to leave his work to spend time with Finny. When they arrive, Finny goes to leap out of the tree but before he jumps, Gene shakes the tree and Finny falls out abruptly.
