It seems simple, but Peter was one of the first African American main characters in literature. Peter helped make a leap in reducing white superiority in American Literature. The book is a quick, lighthearted read and quickly became an American favorite.

Recipient of the Coretta Scott King Book Award, Shane Evans, created “Underground” using a technique that requires images to speak more than the text to convey the heaviness of slavery. The book allows the reader to join in on the path of risking life for freedom on the underground railroad, while eliciting feelings of angst, fear, and relief as freedom is gained. The short and simple sentence structure allows for children to sit with the uncomfortable feelings, which ultimately opens doors for empathy and the ability to formulate questions to better understand what slavery was. Although the book contains a positive ending, Evans makes it clear to the reader that not everyone was as fortunate to receive a happy ending.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon, better known by her stage name Nina Simone, was an African American singer, songwriter, civil rights activist, and spectacular pianist. Simone grew up in North Carolina, where Jim Crow laws ran the way of life and stifled her promising spirit. Simone's father introduced her to the piano, and she caught on very quickly. It was obvious to her family that she was incredibly talented, and soon she was playing in churches and other public vicinities, even the white folks couldn't get enough of her! However, she realized her talent could only take her so far in the segregated south. She made her way up to the Northeast, where she felt she had better opportunities for success. One day, she started playing her music in a rough New Jersey bar, and since then it's been history. She went by the name Nina Simone in an effort to evade anger or disappointment from her Mother, who believed the music she played was sinful.
