         <title>Breast Tomsynthesis (more commonly known as 3D Mammography) allows the breast radiologist to view breast images in a sequences of slices as opposed to standard Digital (2D) imaging. Tomosynthesis is superior to digital imaging as it allows smaller, often more aggressive forms of breast cancers to be found at an earlier, more treatable stage.  A patient will not notice a significant difference in the test itself, other than the exam may take a few seconds longer to obtain the images, however, compression and positioning for each exam is essentially the same.  Digital breast imaging has been the common practice for at least the last 10-15 years.  Tomosynthesis was approved for use by the FDA in 2011, but it has taken several years for the transition from digitial to tomosynthesis imaging.  Orenstein reports that there are a total of 8695 certified breast centers across the United States;  but of those, 5989 are using 3D imaging (Orenstein, 2020).  </title>

         <title>Why Breast Tomosynthesis????</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Berast tomosynthesis (3D imaging) is superior to digital (2D) breast imaging by allowing more thorough evaluation of breast tissue.  It is important to know what kind of mammogram you will receive when you schedule a mammogram.  There are many centers that continue to use digital imaging (2D) because they have not yet committed to tomosynthesis (3D).  The newer, 3D imaging can not only detect early stage and smaller cancers, it can also reduce callbacks for abnormal 2D imaging which helps to lower costs and decrease anxiety in women.  3D imaging can be directly compared to older 2D imaging as the new technology allows 2D images to be constructed from the 3D slices.  Therefore, stable abnormalities in breast tissue that have been followed in the past can continue to be monitored and enhanced imaging can occur without a different imaging modality.   Breast tomosynthesis is also covered as standard breast imaging with almost all insurance carriers, therefore no additional costs for screening mammograms will be assessed to the patient.  Until 3D imaging becomes the standard for breast imaging, it is important for the woman to seek out a center that offers this superior service.</div>]]></description>
