At the beginning of the book Angela gives birth to a beautiful baby girl who mends her and her husbands broken wounds but at not even on year old she passes away sending her relationship back to the way it was. She then has a miscarriage upon arrival in Ireland and she is taken to the hospital. Only days after franks younger brother falls ill and he also passes away. He is an alcoholic and neglects her and her children. Although he does stop drinking briefly when Angela gives birth to their first daughter but later lets himself and the family go again after she passes away. They loose the sense of safety that a father provides a family. The male children also lost their roll model who is supposed to teach them what is right and wrong as a man.
