The Roman Empire controlled much of this area, due to their sophisticated and advanced technology for the time and their extremely strong and large military forces. Because of the Roman engineering of the time, goods and people were able to be transported with ease. Whilst building the Temple of Artemis, sections of the columns used were placed in a spherical wooden structure and rolled to the construction site. This allowed materials to be imported from great distances. The key languages of the time were Latin, Greek and Aramaic. Written communication was common in well educated people during this time as St Paul frequently wrote letters that made up a significant part of the New Testament in the Bible. Different ethnic and cultural groups living in the main regions were the Galatians living in the region of Galatia (modern day Turkey), the Cretans living in Crete (a Greek island), Persians living in Cappadocia, and Arabs, Asians and Romans living throughout the Mediterranean. Paul went from condoning the killing, stoning and imprisonment of Christians to becoming one. He had a privileged life and a strict Jewish and Secular education. Saul was brought was brought up as a zealous Jew and believed that Christians were a threat to the authority of his religion. Saul’s conversion occurred when he was travelling to persecute Christians. A bright light blinded him when he heard Jesus’ voice say “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”. Saul then came to the realisation that his actions were wrong. So he was Baptised and took the name of Paul. Paul devoted the rest of his life to converting others to Christianity and spreading the word of the Lord. The extent of Paul’s first journey covered a large expanse of the Mediterranean. The communities he travelled and preached to can be clearly seen in the map to the right. St Paul, along with his companion Barnabas, started his first journey at Syrian Antioch’s seaport Seleucia. They then sailed to Cyprus where they taught people about Christianity in the synagogues throughout the island. They both travelled to Pamphylia and another Antioch located in Pisidia (near modern-day Turkey). Later, they went down Lycaonia where they worked in Iconium, Lystra and Derbe. In Iconium, he spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed in what they were saying and in Lystra, Paul healed a lame man (Acts 14:1:24). As they were passing through Pisidia and Pamphylia again, they worked in Perga, went down to Attalia and then caught a ship back to Syrian Antioch.

The nine letters were addressed to the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and the Thessalonians (some received more than one letter). Some of the themes and messages seen in Paul’s epistles are achieving righteousness and salvation by being faithful to the lord, not through one’s status. Jews were used to performing rituals to prove their belief in their faith. When Paul was preaching about Christianity, he said that no rituals were needed in order to prove dedication, you just have to make your actions reflect your beliefs.
