Target Audience

Suicide Squad is a follow up from the film Batman VS Superman. Because of this there is already an established audience who would have an attachment to the previous film. Also the film would attract people who are fans of DC comics in general as they will remember classic characters from the film. The audience could be for both males and females. For example the use of the male gaze with Harley Quinn would attract the male audience and something like the inclusion of crazy romance between Joker and Harley Quinn can attract the female audiences as well.

The trailer follows a linear narrative as events within the trailer occur in chronological order. About 1 minute in we beign to see explosion and action happen, creating a disruption in the narrative. The explosion, specifically, is a key convention of the superhero genre as this generates excitement and presents the type of chaos that occurs in the world of DC superheros. The audience are introduced to all the characters individually, allowing for the audience to create a relationship with each of the characters, keeping them intrigued and hooked onto the narrative.

We see that the film title comes at the end of the trailer. This is one of the main conventions of a trailer and is there to leave the audience with a lasting impression of the film and making it more memorable to the audience. The end title stereo-typically has the actors names going around the top of the 'suicide squad' logo. The target sudience is broadened because of the inclusion of the A List actors, so even if people don't know much about the superheros' story lines, they will still be intrigued to watch these popular actors.

The Suicide Squad logo is multicoloured, and you can see that they flicker as they come into shot. This portrays a mysterious vibe because it reminds me of an abandoned town which has some flickering lights - DC Comics tend to have quite dark films so this atmosphere created is not new to the primary audiences. However, the bright colours fit in with the quirky, anti-hero style of the film, the animation on the 'Q', has quite a sinister look connoting a dark atmosphere for the trailer. The smiley face on the 'Q' is effective in making the font unique to the film because it represents the Joker who is a key character within the film.

The trailer uses a frequent amount of jump cuts to go from one scene to another, this adds suspense to the trailer keeps the audience on edge, making them want to continue watching. At the beginning of the trailer, each character within the trailer is briefly introduced to the audience, the shots are short but long enough for the audience to the the positions of the characters at that moment. The first character to be introduced is Harley Quinn. The long shot of her sat down allows the audience to see the surroundings (which is clearly a high alert prison, with thick metal bars and a number of guards). She is sat in a cross legged position highlighting that she is comfortable within her surroundings which implies that she's been in there for a long period of time.

When trying to showcase action scenes within the trailer, the pace of shots increases in speed to signify a tense section of the trailer that is occurring. The trailer is cut to the music which is slow and relaxing but can also create a sinister atmosphere as well. But as the trailer progresses the music gets more paced and so do the actions of the characters. For example we see four quick drum hits play with four consecutive actions of Deadshot picking up a weapon and reloading it foreshadowing the action that is to come.

There is also an establishing shot of the camera tracking the path of the helicopter, the camera is focused on the helicopter denoting the importance of the helicopter implying that it is going somewhere important. The shot also establishes a location for the trailer which is a city location, it is a location that is relatable to a wide audience and is usually a main feature in fantasy, superhero films.

The mise en scene of the trailer is conventional to the superhero genre, all of the characters within the trailer have their own costume that is suited towards their personality, which is what makes them unique. An example of this is Harley Quinn, she wears quite a revealing costume and is used as a figure of attention for male characters within the trailer (Male Gaze) , her character is quite underrepresented as she is represented as a sex symbol as she wears revealing shorts and a crop top. Her costume and hair is quite colourful connoting her as a happy character with not many worries. She is also portrayed as indepenadant as she is shown to take charge a lot of the time, disobeying the others' orders, representing her as a unintentionally dominant character.

Another character shown in the trailer is The Joker. He is heavily portrayed as a twisted character who is feared by many within the storyline. His bright green hair and make up are connotations of the original joker so classic comic book readers who have a bigger connection to the story and character profiles, don't have to experience a completely different Joker (a change in a character's look has caused a lot of controversy in the past). The Joker has tattoos on his face and body which is stereotypical among criminals. The medium shot of the Joker below has an impact on the audience because it comes across as sinister and that shot alone can describe Joker's complete personality because of his actions and the way he is shown to feel about them with the villainous smile.

Deadshot is the most stereotypical superhero/villain out of them all (appearance wise). His highly technical suit highlights the fact that he is different to the other characters, and the fact that they are red and black connote evil and danger showing that his is a critical character in the trailer. The trailer portrays Deadshot as quite controlling with the shots of Deadshot being quicker in the trailer to express the capability in his combat - which is very unique compared to the other characters.

Throughout the entire trailer for Suicide Squad, there is a non diegetic soundtrack of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. The soundtrack is recognizable all around the world making the trailer memorable to many people. As mentioned previously the trailer is edited to the music (like the helicopter fire in rhythm with the drums etc) - adding to thee quirkiness of the film. There is also features of dialogue for example "get me out of here', showing that they are in need of help, which is ironic as they are the most dangerous criminals in the DC world. There are typical sound effects like the punching sound, gun fire etc- all what is needed in an action film. There is a diegetic sound of the Joker laughing, it sounds like there's almost an effect over the sound giving it a sinister sound, which fits in with the personality of the joker. As the film is seen to be wacky, there are also small sound effects, such as a can opening, which elaborate the comedic element of the film, therefore appealing to a wider audience.
