Water has a positively charged end and a negatively charged end but these charges are only slight. This makes water a dipole: a polar molecule with a positive and negative charge separated by a very small distance. Water can form hydrogen bonds: the weak attractive forces between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and an atom with a partial negative charge; usually nitrogen or oxygen.

Used for metabolic processes: hydrolysis where water is a reactant and condensation where water is a product.

High latent of heat vaporisation: a lot of heat energy is required to turn water to a vapour from a liquid. Important in temperature control in the body.

High specific heat capacity: a lot of energy is required to alter the temperature of water, due to the hydrogen bonds formed which need to be broken. This is efficient as it prevents fluctuations in large bodies of water which keeps habitats stable & allows enzymes to work efficiently.

Cohesion & adhesion: cohesion is when water molecules stick together and adhesion is when water molecules stick to other molecules.

High surface tension: cohesion of water molecules produces a high surface tension which supports the body of an insect.

Transparent: water is transparent which lets sunlight shine through ponds which allows aquatic plants to photosynthesise efficiently.

High density: maximum density of water is 4 degrees celsius. Ice has a lower density due to the hydrogen bonds holding the water molecules further apart, this means it floats on large bodies of water which prevents large bodies of water completely freezing, making it a good insulator and allows organisms beneath to survive.
