Literary Circles are group reading sessions in which your group reads certain parts of the book and then discusses what has happened. Each member should have a chance to share their reflection.

Each reading session will involve a task to complete. It is a group effort that requires a lot of collaboration, one of our key school values.

The task should be completed as a team, with one person scribing the responses on the padlet after team discussion.

Each circle (or group) will report back to the class on what has happened in their chapter/excerpt so that the class can better understand the text. The 'reporter' must be a different person to the scribe.

Each person will then complete a summary of their own.

Literary Circles with a ghost story can be like solving a big puzzle!

1. Why is Beth’s father so upset?
2. What did Aunty Viv and Aunty June mean when they told Beth she’d see her mother again ‘on another side’? Did Beth believe them?
3. What do you think Beth’s Grandpa Jim meant when he said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”?
4. When Beth describes her father as having “a lost expression [she’d] come to hate”, what do you think that tells us about Beth’s feeling towards her dad’s grief?
5. In the final paragraph of the extract, describe Beth’s protectiveness over her father.

Sample Summary
Beth's father is so upset because he has lost his daughter, Beth, in a car accident. He is struggling to come to terms with the loss and 'stuck in grief' over it. Beth is protective over her father and she describes him as having a 'lost expression [she'd] come to hate.' meaning that she is effected by the pain he is feeling. He can still see her as a ghost - which is a sign of both of them not being ready to let go. She believes she must watch over him while he heals and so it doesn't become too much for him. Beth's Aunties talk of her seeing her mother 'on another side' in the after life (as her mother died years earlier. Although Beth hadn't seen her yet, she knew she would (when she left her dad). When Beth’s Grandpa Jim said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”, he means that life happens and you have to go with whatever will be.

"Catching had been through something awful."

Isobel wants to 'be heard' because when she was in captivity she had not been listened to. Noone had cared for her wellbeing or safety and she is crying out for help now.

Isobel isn't ready to talk about the fire yet, she would rather discuss her friend, Crow. Instead of responding to the questions from Michael, she wants to talk about things her way because she needs to get it all of her chest now that she is trusting enough to tell someone. She's had to do whatever she was told for far too long in the 'beneath place'.

She is spoken to by her mother, what impact does this have on Catching?

Sample summary
Catching is taken by the Fetchers and treated like property. They go through tunnels and she is dropped on the floor. The Feed arrives, a white, large man who has no respect for Catching as she is Indigenous. She is grabbed and abused by The Feed. She says "My eyes leak hot tears. My throat rips itself apart with screams I can't scream." This trauma leaves her terrified. The pain she experiences and the hurt that she has felt is too much to bear. Crow informs her that all of the other girls who were here were treated like this and they are all now dead. Catching says her connections are broken and she is shattered. The spirit of her mother speaks to her and Catching says she 'can endure' and get through it with the help of remembering the strength of her ancestors.

Catching goes through a frightening experience with two mysterious figures, First and Second and a scary presence called The Feed. The Feed causes intense pain and takes something intangible. Afterward, Catching wakes up feeling weak. Crow suggests that finding freedom might involve accepting a kind of inner change. They then realise there are two Feeds, which makes the situation even scarier and more complicated.

ACTIVITIES

1. What is different about The Feed?

What's different about The Feed is that his eyes aren't like mirrors, they're more like pieces of brown rock. This makes him different from the others and hints that he might be more unusual or even scarier.

2. Isobel says she is turning into Crow. What does she mean?

When Isobel says she's turning into Crow, she means she feels like she's changing. It's like a way of saying she's becoming different, maybe because of what she's going through. It's not a literal transformation, but more of a feeling inside her.

3. What do we learn at the end of this chapter?

At the end of this chapter, we find out that there are actually two things called "The Feed." This makes the situation even more complicated and dangerous for Catching. It's like they're facing an even bigger challenge than they first thought.

Isobel Catching, the witness of the fire. She's taken to the hospital for a check-up. Beth and her detective father arrive to interview her. The hospital is described as a weatherboard building with a blue exterior. Isobel, known as Catching, expresses concerns about her account being believed. Despite her initial reluctance, Catching agrees to talk. She shares that her name's origin is tied to her great-great-grandmother's cattle-catching skills. Catching begins her narrative, revealing it didn't start with the fire, but with a sunset.

ACTIVITIES

1. What was the suspected cause of the fire?

Director Tom Cavanagh, nurse Martin Flint and Alexander Sholt

2. Why was no one overcome with grief about the fire?

This is because people didn’t care about the people that died and lost because they had no relationships and connections with them, or they might not have been involved or had strong emotional ties to this place. Alternatively, people must have different ways to cope with trauma, so it really depends on every individuals’ beliefs.

3. Describe Catching's reaction to Michael.

She wasn't impressed and sniffed then walked back into her room

4. When Michael tells Catching that he is there to listen, what is her reply?

Yeah you say that now. But when i start talking, your going to tell me there's no such things as monsters and other-places

5. Isobel is thinking about something. How does that make her feel? Provide a quote that supports your view.

She was thinking about the monster and other-places and this made her feel uneasy and frightened

1. If Catching was abandoned by her mother, why would she have said that she had died?

Because, to catching, it was like her mother died, because she felt so hurt by the fact that her mother abandoned her.

2. What did Michael suspect Nurse Flint and Director Cavanagh of doing?

He suspected that nurse Flint died in the fire and that director Cavanagh was embezzling money from the children's home so when the fire happened he decided to run.

3. What do we learn about Catching and Beth when Beth storms back into the hospital?

Catching has the ability to see Beth, even though Beth has passed away, and the only person who was able to see her was her dad.

4. Why does Catching have this ability?

I believe the ability was most likely passed down by generation, similar to the rest of her strengths. For example, her grandma was known to swim like a fish and when Catching was swimming through the flash flood, she did the same, thinking back to her past, to solve problems in the present.

5. Why was the anger bubbling up inside of Beth?

Because she didn't like the things that catching was saying, and she didn't like that a tiny part of her agreed with what catching was saying.

6. What has made Beth cry by the end of the chapter? Can you link it to the quote "Hang about and hold your dad's hand for the rest of his life"?

The things that make Beth cry at the end of the chapter are the things that catching has said, and how Beth doesn't know how to comfort her father, now that she has passed away.

How does Beth feel at the beginning of this chapter?

She says that she feels “trapped, between two different sides to the world, and not truly part of either one” This symbolises that Beth is feeling like she doesnt know where to go, and doesn't know where she belongs.

2. Why did Sarah's disappearance not get much attention?

Sarah’s disappearance did not get much attention because she was aboriginal. The routine procedures that would usually take place in the instance of a person going missing weren’t done when Sarah disappeared, this was evident in her file. Michael says “If a white girl had gone missing like that, just vanished on her way home from school there’d have been an outcry. It would have been on the news, in the papers, something everyone talked about on the street. Instead the only people speaking for Sarah - her family, her friend - were ignored.”

3.
