Ways that I am connecting with my students is through communication and fun. We have serious learning time, but we also have down time where we play games like This or That, just chat / maybe show off our pets, and have a minute or two to just get to know one another. I feel it is pivotal to communicate with students that they are safe and in an environment that they will not get ridiculed norbullied, and that seems to really make the connection stronger. It also provides the opportunity for students to feel comfortable to communicate :)

I get silly with my kids so that they can see me being a human being. Sometimes I sing, or move weird...just to get their attention. I also always talk to everyone when they come online. I try to greet each person. During enrichment, I send a message everyday telling them I am here. We always use the chat feature and I do allow a moment or two off track at times. I mail home postcards as much as possible also.

I connect with my students when the cameras first come on by saying good morning to each and every one as they come into GoGuardian or Meet. Then I play a Good Morning song to allow for some of our latecomers to get logged in. We take a few minutes to watch what Dr. M. and the STEM Ambassadors have worked so hard to accomplish and recognize them and draw them into a discussion. I love commenting about their rooms, pets, hair, etc., and definitely about the great work they are doing and the neatness/uniqueness of it. I do chat with them and make comments through voice and chat. If students seem to be stuck or struggling, I am able to chat/comment with them and get them back on task. I also scan the attendance to see who is having a birthday and send an announcement to everyone to wish this person a birthday and play a birthday video clip. Recognize accomplishments/achievements big and small.

Sometimes just to keep the class engaged (and check to see who is still actively in class and not just logged in but away from their computer) I'll ask a random question like "What is your favorite season?' or "Do you think the groundhog will see his shadow?" or "What's your favorite holiday food?" It gets us off task for a few minutes, but it's fun and keeps them on their toes....they like it when I ask food related questions especially! :o)

I begin class by always telling them good morning/afternoon and how glad I am that they are with me today and that I hope their day is going well. I have a habit of breaking out in song, which most students enjoy (they send me messages so I know its true). I share things about myself with them so that they can feel a bit more connected to me. I have allowed time for students to show their pets or any cool item they have, with the class. I give individual praise by saying their name. And they love when I share random facts with them.

I always attempt to greet students both in person and virtually. This opportunity should never be missed if possible. Allowing students to know a bit more about you through being yourself in a professional manner is the best way to humanize yourself and relate to your children. I find that kids feel more trusting and engaged with someone who is personable rather than someone who is standoffish and cold. As long as professional boundaries and discipline is maintained having a good conversation about non school related interests of students or even just being nice at the beginning of class can have lasting effects and lead to better teaching and learning in the classroom.

If it is their birthday I always acknowledge it through the chat. I try during the lesson to share about my personal life, my children and grandchildren so they know I am more than a teacher. I like to use the chat feature so no one feels awkward for me talking to them personally. It is also a way to keep them focused on the lesson.

I make sure that every day I joke with the kids about their camera angles and status. It makes them laugh and they correct anything without thinking they are being punished. Stuff like, "Hey Ethan, cool forehead man, I'd love to see your face though and not just your hair. And an instrument is even better!" Or my favorite is complementing on the crown molding on the ceiling.

Then at the end of the class I wave and call out all their names as fast as I can to tell them goodbye. It's just a way that makes them smile and know I see them. (and I can take attendance haha).

Honestly I don't do anything different than what I would do if my students were sitting in my class. Before class begins I speak to all the kids by name and ask them how things are going. We talk about topics they want to discuss and move into the lesson. I have also formed virtual relationships with parents/grandparents and siblings that I see walking by the camera. I find meaningful ways to teach my lessons so that the student can have something to relate to the subject matter. I guess I connect by just being me.......TIZZYT!!!😂
