Biotic factors of the desert biome include animals such as the bobcat and the desert tortoise. Bobcats have large and sharp teeth that allow them to hurt and kill their prey. Their claws are long so that they can dig through the thick skin of their prey. Their fur also changes color to blend in with the desert environment. Desert tortoises have the ability to burrow to avoid the scorching dry temperatures of the desert. They are also able to store water in their bladder and can tolerate large amounts of urea in their blood to avoid losing any water via urination.

The desert is compiled of over 320 native plants species. These plant species can be used for a couple things. For one, they are used for food, such as Pinon Pine Nuts, Prickly Pear, Yucca, Pine Needle Tea, Chia Sage, Agave, Mesquite, Saguaro, and Cholla. They can also be used for medicine, such as Butterfly weed, also known as pleurisy-root, used to treat lung ailments and winter illnesses, Wild Licorice, the root is used in teas to support the immune system, Mormon Tea, the stems are used in a tea to heal urinary tract infections, respiratory illnesses, and colds/nasal congestion, and Gumweed used to stimulate mucous membranes in the treatment of asthma and chronic bronchitis.

Where are deserts located?

Deserts are usually located between 30 degrees north and south of the equator. Deserts make up a third of earth's surface. Deserts are formed when there is little rainfall over the course of the year. The average rainfall for a desert is 10 inches or 25 centimeters. Moist air from bodies of water near the equator passes over land and over mountains. When the air passes over the mountains, it cools and the water vapor in the air is lost as rain or snow. The air then passes the mountain and down to the area known as the desert and by this time, the air is dry and there is no water in the air for precipitation.
