Knowing some of the main customs and politeness rules of other countries can help us to better understand foreign people with cultures and ways of acting different from ours. The way of thanking, greeting, giving gifts... may be very different from the way we do it, or perhaps very similar.

The people of Ecuador have a warm and friendly spirit and are very hospitable people. Ecuadorian society is an intriguing mix of being very social, yet formal and conservative. Formalities generally increase in the central highlands, while the coastal region and the rainforest are more easy going.

In Russia, people are expected to address others using "usted" and reserve the use of the first name until otherwise indicated. This reflects a certain formality in the initial treatment. In Colombia, while "usted" is used in formal situations or with older people, it is more common to use "tú" in informal situations, reflecting a more relaxed and approachable attitude in general.

In Japan, the traditional greeting is a slight nod of the head, which can vary in angle depending on the level of respect you want to show. In Colombia, it is common to greet with a handshake, a hug or a kiss on the cheek, depending on the degree of trust and closeness that exists between people. These gestures often reflect Colombian warmth and hospitality.

In both Ecuador and Colombia, people tend to be very hospitable and welcoming in their daily interactions. Greetings are a way of showing courtesy and respect towards others.

In both countries, basic greetings such as "Hello", "Good morning", "Good afternoon", "Good evening" and questions such as "How are you?" are used to start a conversation and show interest in the other person's well-being.

In Ecuador, as in Colombia, one can be quite informal in daily dealings, using simple and close greetings. However, in Colombia, formality in treatment may vary more depending on the region and the specific situation, while in Ecuador it tends to be more uniform throughout the country.
