Russia became a Christian country in two notable ways.
1. Princess Olga traveled to Constantinople, and asked the Byzantine Emperor to teacher her more about his religion (Orthodox Christianity). Even though she encouraged her people to convert, nobody would, not even her own son! However, this started the process of Russia becoming a Christian country.
2. Prince Vladimir, grandson of Princess Olga, learned about Christianity through merchants speaking about religious beliefs in the Byzantine Empire. Vladimir wanted Kiev to be a great power. He was interested in what the religion was of other great powers. His nobles suggested he send ten 'good and true' men to visit and learn about those lands/Christianity. These ten men reported that they were most amazed with Orthodox Christianity and mainly the Byzantine churches. Vladimir immediately converted and forced all the people in Kiev to convert as well. This is how Russia became a Christian country.

One Russian Princess, Princess Olga, married Igor of Kiev but after he died, she took over ruling because her son was to young. She went to Constantinople and came across the emperor, who wanted her to marry him. Olga refused, but asked him to teach her about Chistianity, and he did. After she learned, she tried to Christianize Kiev, but only a few people converted. Her own son didn't want to convert either. So, since she didn't want to force people to convert, she let people convert, but it wasn't a requirement. Princess Olga's grandson, Prince Vladmir, wanted to gain powerr and learn about other religions so, he sent "ten good and true men," according to the nobles, to learn more about religions. After the men described how beautiful Chistian Churches were, Prince Vladmir converted to a Christian, forced other people to convert, and forced people to shove Russian idols into the Dneiper River. The first way Russia became Christian was because of Princess Olga opening the topic and the second was when Prince Vladmir converted and forced the people of Russia to follow.

Before, all Russia was was a few villages along the rivers in Eastern Europe. Then, people from other countries came to conquer and/or trade, but they brought new ideas and customs. These people were the Slavs. They settled peacefully in Kiev until the powerful Vikings arrived from the north in Scandinavia, and destroyed their peace by forcing the Slavs to give them money and goods. But, they also blended with the Slavs to become known as what we call Russians today. The first way Russia became Christian is Greek missionaries from the powerful capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople, came and taught the early Russians about Christianity. This attempt wasn't successful because many people didn't become Christians. The second attempt succeeded, however. Kiev's ruler, Vladimir, wanted Kiev to become very powerful. So, he sent ten men to find the best religion. These ten impressed men told Vladimir of monotheistic Orthodox Christianity and the splendid churches. Vladimir became Christian and forced his people to become Christian, too. Legend says he had statues of Russian gods thrown into the Dnieper River.

One way the Russians became Christians was when Princess Olga went to Kiev and encouraged people to convert to Christianity. Even though this was unsuccessful, some people did convert. Another, more extreme way of the people converting would be when Prince Vladimir forced everyone in Kiev to be Christian. Vladimir had wanted Kiev to be very powerful, and because Christianity was popular and fairly easy to convert to, Vladimir forced everyone to do this.

1. Princess Olga married Igor I, but he died, so she became the ruler, because her son was too young to rule. She visited Constantinople and met the emperor. The emperor fell in love with her, but she declined his hand in marriage. However, she was interested and Christianity and asked the emperor to teach her everything he knew about it. The emperor did so, and Princess Olga was fascinated with Christianity. She converted to Christianity and encouraged Kiev to also convert. Most people in Kiev did not want to convert, and she did not force them to. This was the start of Russia becoming a Christian country.
2. Many years later, Vladimir, Princess Olga's grandson, was ruling Kiev. He wanted Kiev to be very powerful, and the thought the first step in making Kiev powerful was choosing a religion of another empire. He sent ten trusted men to find a religion that would make Kiev powerful. They returned with the news that the religions he could chose from were Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. He chose not to convert Kiev to Islam because when you practice Islam, you cannot drink alcohol, and he knew he and Kiev would not be able to resist alcohol. He chose not to convert to Judaism, because it is very hard to become Jewish. However, he was fascinated with Orthodox Christianity and chose to convert Kiev to it. Most of Kiev did not want to convert, but Vladimir forced Kiev to convert to Orthodox Christianity against their will. He had all the paintings of previous gods burned and idols of gods that had been worshiped by Slavs for thousands of years thrown into the Dnieper River.

Prince Vladimir was now Russia's king. He was Princess Olga's grandson. He wanted to make his country powerful, so he wanted a monotheistic religion. He sent 10 of his best and honest men to see the Byzantine empire and bring him religions that was going to lead Russia to power. They came back with 3 religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The first reason that Russia became a Christian country was that Vladimir forced them to become Christians. Secondly, Judaism wouldn't work for them as they did not like that they were apart from their homeland. Islam wouldn't work for them because it said"NO WINE!". Russia is a very cold country and they needed wine to warm them up. So, they picked Christianity.

One way Russia became a Christian country is when missionaries from Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, would come to Kiev and spread Orthodox Christianity to the people. Princess Olga, who ruled Kiev, heard about Christianity from the Byzantine Empire. She traveled to Constantinople and met the emperor, who offered to marry Olga, but she rejected him. Although Olga did not accept the offer to marry him, she asked him to teach her about Christianity. The emperor sent a patriarch, a leader of the Orthodox Church, to teach her. When Olga came back from Constantinople, she encouraged the people to convert to Orthodox Christianity, but most of the people refused, including her son. A second way Russia became a Christian country is when Vladimir, Olga's grandson, wanted Kiev to be powerful. He had heard about religions with only one god from merchants. He asked nobles what to do and they told him to send ten men to visit other places and learn about the religions. Vladimir did as they suggested. When the ten men returned, that told of impressive Orthodox Christianity and fantastic Byzantine churches. Vladimir converted to Orthodox Christianity. He ordered that statues and other art of the old gods to be destroyed and forced the people to convert. It is said that he forced statues of the gods to be thrown into the Dnieper River.
