2018-03-06 Today's slides on reported speech

Hi class!
Here is the link to the slides I showed in class
(reported speech) http://bit.ly/2I88D74
--------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Rikkyo and Tokyo Denki students will have an exit test at 1pm on Thursday afternoon in rooms 528 & 529 (near CET reception desk).
--------------------------
Here are some language points that came up:
1) Be careful how you use same:
A: What did you do yesterday?
<del>B: I did same John.</del> This should be:
B: I did the same (thing) as John.
2) Be careful how you use so when making a reference. We use it to replace something that is clear to the reader / listener:
A: Do you think I should go to the doctor?
<del>B: I think so you should go</del>. "should go" is implied by so so this should be:
B: I think so.
3) If you meet somebody for one or two drinks we often say "go for a drink". If you drink rather more than that we can say "go drinking".
4) sign can be a noun and a verb. As a noun it means some kind of notice e.g. a road sign. As a verb it means to write your name. In this instance there is a different noun form which is signature.
Example: We need your signature at the end of the contract.
However, when we talk about the signature of a famous person we use a different noun if it is written for a fan or to present something. That word is autograph.
Example: My cousin collects the autographs of Nobel prize winners.
5) When you are asking about somebody's appearance we often use the verb look:
A: What does your brother look like?
B: He looks quite athletic and handsome. Some people say he looks like Brad Pitt.
----------
A: You look tired. Are you OK?
B: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just a little drowsy because of some medicine I'm taking. My wife says I look like a dormouse.
--------------------------
I hope you all have a lovely afternoon,

Pete

Often you can see them from beaches and other coastal areas - look for the spray from their blowholes (see below). If you're lucky you may even see them slapping their tails or fins or even breaching (jumping out of the water).
More information: https://www.wildaboutwhales.com.au/
There are different whale watching tours available too. Either:
- Report the story from the survivor(s) that you interviewed
or
- Write about your own survival story
----------
Below are some activities in The Rocks that you might be interested in.
- This weekend there are lots of special activities for Bastille Day (the national day of France) around The Rocks and Circular Quay: https://bastillefestival.com.au/
- Every day at 6pm there is a "free" walking tour from Cadman's Cottage (look for the guide wearing a green "I'm free" T-shirt). It is fun but it can be difficult to understand. If you stay until the end then you should pay something for the tour or say "Thank you. I will tell all my friends." The details are here: https://www.imfree.com.au/
- If you would like to try a crocodile, kangaroo or emu pizza, you can go to the Australian Hotel in The Rocks: https://australianheritagehotel.com/
----------
There are also lots of things happening in Parramatta this weekend (see the posts below)
----------
Whatever you do, I hope you have a fantastic weekend!
See you next week!
Pete

2019-10-21 The Good Ticket Inspector Part 2 audio file

Here is the tapescript for the listening exercise we did in class. Below that is the audio file.
---- TAPESCRIPT ----
Part 2
The ticket inspector touched my arm. ‘Listen’ he said ‘when we get to Peterborough station. run as fast as you can to platform 1. The Leeds train will be there.’ I looked at him, without really understanding what he had said. ‘What do you mean?’ I said. ‘Is the train late or something?’ ‘No, it’s not late,’ the ticket inspector said. ‘I’ve just radioed Peterborough station. The train is going to wait for you. As soon as you get on, it’ll leave. The passengers will complain, but let's not worry about that. You’ll get home, and that’s the main thing.’ And he walked away.

I suddenly realized what an amazing thing he had done. I got up and went after him. I wanted to give him everything I had, all the money in my wallet - but I knew he would be offended. I grabbed his arm. ‘I... er... just wanted to...’, but I couldn’t continue.

‘It’s OK,’ he said. ‘No problem.’ ‘I wish I had a way to thank you,’ I said. ‘I really appreciate what you've done.’ ‘No problem,’ he said again. ‘Listen, if you want to thank me. the next time you see someone in trouble, help them. That will pay me back. And tell them to do the same to someone else. It'll make the world a better place.’

When the train stopped, I rushed to platform 1 and sure enough the Leeds train was there waiting, and a few hours later I was with my mum in hospital.

Even now, years later, whenever I think of her, I remember the Good Ticket Inspector on that late-night train to Peterborough. It changed me from a young man who was nearly a criminal into a decent human being. I’ve been trying to pay him back ever since then.
