In the end Sandy decides to transform herself because as she states in one of the last songs in the movie, "she needs a man". One of the biggest songs of the movie is "Summer Nights". In it both Sandy and Danny are telling their version of the summer romance they had. In Sandy's version Danny was a sweet young man who did his best to get her attention, took her out for lemonade and held her hand. As a girl society has expectations of how Sandy should act and she is expected to remain pure and not have any sexual urges. In Danny's version we get a different story. The boys are more interested in how far Sandy went and one even asks if Sandy put up a fight. Danny insinuates that they made out and had sex in the sand. He tells his friends that Sandy was "good". Society pressures boys to have as many sexual experiences as possible and to show that they are a real man. Gender norms such as the man taking care of the woman are also clear in the song. Danny becomes the hero when he says that he saved Sandy from drowning after she gets a cramp. The girls are interested in what Danny had.
