What did I enjoy most about the class?

My favorite part of the class has to have been project wise the (raku) I did, but emotionally the people I sat with. I really enjoyed having a group of people that could give advice, help, and talk the entire time and make class more enjoyable. And they all helped me pick different things out when I was being very indecisive.

What advice would I give to a future student taking this class?

I will say that in this class the most frustrating parts, are also the parts that reap the best rewards. The amount of times I have gotten frustrated over not getting the shape right, is insane. But the best part is that that was how I learned I didn't want the shape to be my original design but instead something else. So I will leave you with the advice to have an open mind and not get too caught up in the moment, just breathe.

I learned that perfect doesn't always mean smooth. When I was spending days just spraying water and brushing the bumps of this animal, I didn't even realize that I could have stop days before and it still would have been smooth. It isn't perfect even after the days of smoothing, but with this project specifically it set the tone in me for the rest that I don't have to worry as much about how smooth the project looks.

Time management. This was by far my most tedious time crunching, coming in every study hall, daunting task I ever did. But the best part is that I wouldn't change any of it. I was able to gauge my personal time limits and how long it takes me to do certain things, like glazing typically doesn't just take one day for me. But I was able to be more creative with this adding cow prints and other drawings onto the piece to make it my very own. So overall this project really taught me to take my time on the details and that there is no rush when I don't want to waste all my hard work on a silly little mistake.

I learned how to take advice. I was really stuck figuring out what I wanted to do with this piece. But with the help of a friend I was able to take their advice and change my project to not only be cuter, but also make it within the time constraints. And in the end this was my favorite piece and I wouldn't have even made it, if it wasn't for taking advice from someone else.

Push my comfort zone. I had originally wanted to make a rope looking structure twisting 2 pieces of clay together. But one day I honestly got bored and decided to braid 3 pieces of clay. It was random but once I draped it across the jar and then added the chain on the outside I fell in love with it. I took something I would have originally never done, pushed past my comfort zone and made something that I think is beautiful out of it.

It's okay if you don't like it. This one was my third piece I did and I will be honest it was promising, until I got distracted and started other project and push it into the back of my mind. And then I wanted the body to be pastel blue but it turned out this deep blue that looked splotchy in some places. But it is still something I take pride in and can acknowledge it isn't my best work, but that's okay. I think he is kinda cutely ugly.

Take my time. I knew from the beginning this piece was going to take me awhile especially if I wanted to add as much detailed as I did. But with an injuring taking me out a few weeks, and overall not being the fastest worker I learned to really slow down and not feel rushed to finish this piece and move on. And eventually I did have to move on but I still came back and worked on this piece in my off time which I enjoyed.

Design/ trial and error. I learned how to more uniquely use glaze to draw and paint instead of do one color. I got to learn a lot with different colors and patterns for the glaze and layering was fun because I could see how it looked pre-fire but I honestly didn't know how it would turn out when I fire it because there was a dip glaze under. But I really think this piece taught me to push past my comfort zone and learn through trial and error if the glaze works or not.

I am not going to like every piece. This piece taught me that even if I really love it throughout the whole process I could eventually not like it, and that's okay. Don't get me wrong the vase is cute, but I really don't like my glaze choice and I think it took away from the design I worked really hard to try and make. It was kinda like my personal version of screffito, except it was tracing on a piece of paper and then pushing that onto the clay and hoping the paper bits don't stick to it. But in the end after putting a lot of work in, I don't love it and I think that is an important thing to get over and not be too attached to my work.

Something specific I learned while making this project

Try something new. I learned with these projects, being my first official ones on the wheel to try new things. Originally I attempted a plate, and other things that weren't successful and turned me off from the wheel. But with a little bit of practice and curiosity I started to try new shapes and sizes and things on the wheel and these two items emerged. I really enjoyed making the jar specifically because I thought it not only looked cool but was something I can hopefully more practically use. And the vase is also a cool shape because I used a silicon tool to make those groves which turned out a lot better than anticipated.

Project I enjoyed most

I enjoyed this project the most mainly because I found that the amount of effort I put into it, and the results were equal. I really enjoyed painting the leaves of the flower with glaze, aswell as using dip glaze for the first time. And I loved the idea of making a matching set with a heart cut out design for the handles which ended up working nicely. Overall this project was the most rewarding for me, and I found it really relaxing and not having to worry about staying inside some lines, and making my own design come to life better than I could have imagined.
