I'm in regular conversations with the local authorities and the financial community to discuss how we can jointly work towards unlocking access to capital for the SDGs, one of the idea that recently emerged was to form a voluntary group to brainstorm on setting up a platform in Geneva for blended finance (based on the idea that we need more data, exchange knowledge and leverage the convening power of all parties). I also reached out to the Federation that agregates the local entreprises (mostly SMEs) and proposed to make a presentation on the SDGs with inviting people from the community to tell their story about sustainability so that this is not an abstract pitch.
I think the best way to know your counterpart, is to work together. Working together, planning, engaging in joint-projects, M&E, are just some basic steps to make private sector and government stakeholders talk to each other. In this regard, the UN System is key to facilitate public and private sector engagement with the 2030 Agenda.

We have been working with a major asset management company on how to enhance the potential for a demographic dividend in Latin America. We work together with that private sector company to approach governments in the region to advocate for the right policies in health, education, gender equality etc but also financial inclusion, that would allow for increased prosperity in ageing societies.

Working with the private sector has become a constant in the agenda of the European Union institutions. Most of the discourse is focused on how to use European Union grant funds (for external action) to leverage at large scale funding from the private sector. However most of this has happened exclusively with financial institutions and as far as I see it, the engagement of private sector companies has become true in only very specific sector, such as the energy one, for instance. Being based in Brussels (a European hub) me and my colleagues have started to think about potential ways in which the UN could tap into the experience of the many existing private sector groups and help create a platform on innovation for the SDGs.
Irene Garcia

At National Level, all is to do in Togo. The private sector does not yet perceive the interest to come with the government and the UN to help implement the 2030 Agenda. The first thing to do, will be a global concertation between the UN, the rivate sector and the Government to share the Agenda 2030 and let every one know what is expecting from him and where are our common responsability

In thins context, I am actually working in two lines of action that I would suggest (based on my experience as UN staff in areas related to the One UN, project management, partnerships and private sector development). I do undertake these two lines in cooperation with private sector entities and sometimes the UN. These two lines of action are: (i) capacity building on sustainable development management, following an impact approach, addressing all actors involved, especially finance, private sector companies and public institutions promoting the integration of SDGs in company strategy and vice versa (integrating innovation and finance in sustainable development project strategies, following a common framework and thus language). In addition to that, (ii) the second line of action is the creation of an event gathering the actors from different sectors (private, public, academia, finance, IOs) to engage in dialogue and provide strategic recommendations and integrated solutions for action in concrete priority areas of interaction (i.e. focused on SDG 9). Summarizing: awareness raising, promoting same language and framework on partnerships projects and fostering cross-sector dialogue which is solution oriented.

Being able to find shared value means being able to clearly articulate the link between human rights, peace, development and prosperity. Being profit driven, private sector needs to clearly see what’s in it for it to invest in sustainable development. So it takes some work of conceptualizing those links and being able to clearly and simply convey messages that can garner attention and interest towards the SDGs as an strategic, long term investment for the private sector. Health, health promotion and qualifying the demand for quality, universal and public health services – with a focus on women, adolescents and young people- is an area that seems to be well poised to be an entry point for any such dialogue.

Having been in the private sector for over three decades, I know that the sector will respond to the SDG's. But they first need to be aware that they can contribute - so raising awareness is teh first step. Next, they need help on how they can contribute. The best way is to show case case studies. Case studies brings to life all the concepts and complicated concepts from the UN - so a collection of case studies becomes important.
I beleive that if these two are attended to on a war footing, we can bring in more of the private sector into the fold.

The private sector groups in the Caribbean were key stakeholders in the development of Vision 2030 National Development Plans. Subsequently, the UN MAPs initiatives that sought to mainstream the SDGs into public policy framework also included the private sector. While these efforts built awareness about the SDGs I do not believe that they were sustained to integrate the private sector as a constant negotiating partner in all the deliberations across the sectors. I echo the need for awareness building, not only among large established businesses but also range of entities comprising the private sector in the Caribbean. A dedicated private sector SDG Forum, possibly through the Chambers of Commerce could lend support to the development efforts if they are made to understand what to do and how to engage in meaningful ways. Governments need to provide incentives for the partnerships and share in the risks and benefits of the various initiatives.

Raising awareness is absolutely critical. In the Secretariat outreach and engagement is somewhat limited. This will need to change and capacity building in partnerships and communications is needed in order to get messages out to the private sector. Technology touches all the SDGs and we are working with the technology sector to raise awareness of how they could contribute to the 2030 Agenda. We are launching innovation and technology labs in countries that will bring together the government and private sector to research how emerging technologies can address specific topics for example getting more women in technology, how technology can help vulnerable women, eco tourism, smart cities, e-education, ethical fashion, green technologies, and much more.
