After learning what linguistic profiling is, it's important to know how I can be linguistically profiled. Taking this quiz allowed me and other people see how they speak along with knowing the association of how they speak to a certain region. The quiz is a simple one that allows others, like my friends, to see how they speak

There even was a trend on social media platforms that highlighted and emphasized the variations of speaking. The accent tag is used to show the different accents in MD.

It is said that music is the universal language but that's not necessarily true. There has to be a standard basic understanding of words when listening to music. There are barriers in music where it prevents listeners to understand the lyrics of the song. I looked at the song and at first, I believed that everybody would be able to understand the song but then I realize there are certain terms that some people may not know. I explain further in my discussion.

When students are given standardized exams it's with the hope that each student is given an equal chance to succeed in that exam. In some cases that's not true because of dialects that a student has which differs from the word choice that the exams provide. In a group effort we researched if the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) was fair enough to provide college entry for all students who take it. The role of dialect and the affect on academic success on standardized exams is further discussed in our paper.

I am an Early Childhood/Special Education major, so I will be teaching children from a young age and children with special needs. So how I decide to teach my students and how I decide to verbalize my teaching highly impacts what my students will learn. Every child struggles and not every child has the same problems as others so it is my job to figure out how I can help my students to the best of my ability to make sure that they succeed in the future. When teaching I need to consider different variables and that also includes the culture in which my students come from along with the way they speak. How they talk, how they hear, and how they understand things all need to be taken into account when it comes to the process of learning.

Our group said that culture is made up of different aspects but those different aspects come together to form a particular culture. The quilt has different patterns and is stitched together to represent different aspects being united into one culture. From this definition and momento is how we further progressed in the class by having a solid definition of what culture is.

I chose this video as an artifact because this is the first video that we watched and, I feel, is the foundation of this class. Linguistically profiling is assuming certain things about a person based on the way a person speaks. In my opinion, I feel like everybody linguistically profiles when communicating with a person. This video captures what linguistic profiling is, although it is an old video it's still very relevant in this time.

I can only imagine that this class will continue to connect with classes that I will take because this class focuses on the perception of communication and communication is in everything. This class has clarified what code is for my Hearing and Speech class (HESP) along with giving labels to things that I do on a daily basis (code-switching). I feel like this class will connect with every class that I will take in the future just because this class is on the premise of what communication is.

Funds of Knowledge

This is a term/theory that I researched a bit more after hearing it in class. Essentially this theory states that students should be able to link what they know to what they are going to learn. Students will continue to learn and build off of their prior knowledge, which is essentially what teachers want to do. My goal as a teacher is to understand what my students know and build from that. From being a teacher assistant and just from personal experience, learning something from scratch is super difficult; I couldn't imagine one of my students, who will likely, be a special needs student or be a student who is only five years old to learn something from the very beginning. So learning what my students already know and trying to make my lesson plans, to mold the curriculum, to what they know is easier for my students to learn. Something that I have learned from every single education class that I have taken thus far is that students carry their home with them in their book bags. That means that students bring what they know from home to the classroom and apply what they know, in the classroom which is difficult for educators because not everyone comes from the same household so students all start at different levels. I really like this theory and I'm glad that I learned about it because I had basic principles of what the “Funds of Knowledge” was but now I can do my own personal research and understand even more.

I said this before, I can code switch between Spanish and English. To me it's known as Spanglish, being able to understand and speak Spanish and English without any hesitation. I was watching some comedy routines I stumbled upon George Lopez's comedy set, in this specific video it shows how fluent George is able to switch from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. A person who is not able to code-switch between these two languages may struggle to understand what he is saying and can find this specific act as uncomedic. For me this specific act was funny because it has happened in my household; everybody in my house can code-switch between English and Spanish.
