TBOTWB Ch 9 Response by Peggy Witteveen

Answer one of the questions with a quality response (5-7 sentences with specific details to support your opinion): QUEST ONE: How do you think people can convince themselves that a group of people are less than human? QUEST TWO: Why did the Jews not leave the factory? Why would they have a hard time comprehending the fact that they were free?

They also got very good food and shelter and if they went out they don't have enough money to buy something as good as this. They would have a hard time comprehending they were free because they were locked up for a long time and they wouldn't just be free now. Also, half of them die so not just like a couple of jews would be free. The Jews in the factory have a very good place right now and environment.

I am doing question two. I think the Jews didn't leave the factory because since they had been in there for so many they didn't comprehend that they were free. I think it would be hard for them after years of torture to understand that they were going to live a normal life. All of those years of fighting or their lives and surviving only with one small serving of soup a day finally had paid off. I think they were also scared of what was going to happen outside of the ghetto.

Question 2:
The Jews did not leave the factory because they were in limbo after Schindler had left them there. They had no news, they did not know where to go, or what would happen to them if they left the camp. I think the Jews would have a hard time comprehending the fact that they were free because they have been kept in captivity for years, where they were brutally tortured every day both, mentally and physically. They were malnourished, sleep-deprived, and hopeless. They thought they were destined to die. So, when the Russian soldier told them that they were free, it may have been hard for the Jews to comprehend or even believe the fact that they were actually free. I think it may have taken some Jews, months or even years, to realize that they were free.

I think people are able to convince themselves that a group is less than human because they want to feel strong. As humans we want to feel superior than others we want to feel dominant and some people take it to far. Also people may be going through a hard time and they want to blame someone for it so they can take their anger out. When this idea spreads people that don't agree will convince themselves to fit in with other people because humans are very social creatures. In some cases people that don't follow the trend of belief are considered less to and are killed, this fear of death can make them follow the trend. In conclusion people identify people as less than human when they feel threatened and want to blame it on someone and feel superior, which spreads through people wanting to fit in.

I think that you have to be so low and horrible to believe that a group of people are less than human. The Nazi's believed that Since the Jews "lost the war", it's okay to treat the people like they are objects and that they have no purpose. The Nazi's numbered every Jews and gave them a tattoo of that number. They did that to count them and also to de-humanize them into thinking that they are just objects and slaves and nothing else. So trying to get the Jews into thinking they are worthless just because of what one person thinks, is not okay.

It seemed like they couldn’t just go back to their old lives because nothing would be the same. This ties in with them trying comprehending the fact that their free. This would be hard for them to think about because they just went through a war that almost got them killed. I also think they made up excuses to hate them like saying they were Christ killers and really just because they were different with different beliefs. The Nazis thought they were superior and were basically brain washed that the Jews were bad and they were better. They also had a leader (Adolf Hitler) who was very assertive and really pushed for what he wanted which was a awful wrong thing he wanted. Adolf Hitler was manipulative and evil and that is how he got people to believe this awful, awful thing that Jews were less than human.

Also, if they left they wouldn't now where to go because all they new was they were in Brunnlitz. They, also were very confused that they were just left the Germans didn't care. They, all just left so they stayed to see if they would come back possibly.

I did question two, why did the Jews not leave the factory? Why would they have a hard time comprehending the fact that they were free? I think that Jews had a hard time leaving the factory because they were not sure the war was done. They may have had a hard time believing they were free because Schindler could have been lying to them. Even though Schindler was a good man no one knew who they could trust. They also probably didn't leave because they would have had no where to go. If they stayed at the factory they probably would have had a better chance of living because they had shelter and other Nazi could have killed them if they saw them .

I think that people can convince themselves that other people are less human because these people think that they are the top priority. They also think that if these people are treated differently and have fewer beauty features then they are too different, and therefore they are not as human. And the reason that these Jews have less of everything that the non - jews have is that these jews pretty much got their whole life taken away. This includes everything that they used for themselves, like makeup, clothes, their body shape, and even their hair. I also think that the non - jews were biased because of all of these nazis telling the non - jews that the jews were causing all of the problems.

Question #2
I believe that there were a few reasons the Jews didn't leave. First, I think that they knew the Russians would be there soon and didn't want to be seen running through the woods and mistaken for Germans and gunned down by the Russians. Second, they had just spent a few years of their lives trapped in "camps" and ghettos being treated like disease ridden animals. After being treated that way for so long it would take you a while to realize that the suffering was over and you were free. The Jews probably thought they were dreaming when Schindler told them they we free, and were overwhelmed with emotions.

The Jews did not leave the factory after Schindler freed them because they had no where else to go to. They went from ghettos, to concentration camps, to Emalia, to more concentration camps, and then the factory. They had not had a place to call home in over four years. Nor did they have any food or warm clothes to help them survive. The factory provided them with more resources than they would get anywhere else. The Jews would have a hard time comprehending the fact that they were free because they had been through so many hard times and thought that they would never end. The fact that they had been beaten, tortured, and almost killed many times and eventually came out of each situation alive is incredible. Believing the luck that they had and everything they had been through is a very hard thing to understand. In conclusion, even though the Jews were free, they stayed at the factory because they had no where else to go, and all of the conditions that they survived made it hard to believe that they survived the Holocaust.

The Jews also had no clue where there were at because when the Jews moved place to place they lost track of where they where at. The Jews got very little food so I bet there body's are week. They also had no way of blending in because they were super skinny and had raggedy clothes with a bald head.

I would have done the same thinking if you walk out of that buliding. I would have been shot down because maybe a solider wanted one more dead Jew. To make Him happy and show that they are worthless. It would be hard to comprhened the fact that I was free and after all this time there was a chance. To escape to leave this horrible place i've been living in for so many years of my life now.

And also it would be the safest choice to wait for Russian alies to free them. The Jews had a hard time comprehending that they were free. They had a hard time doing that because after all the years they were just tortred they were now free. If I was in that situation I would have a hard time beliving that too.

Some people think that who ever is different then them they are not human. They probably tell themselves that since they are different or believe something different then they aren't human or less then human. Some people can't put it in their mind that people are going to be different and that is okay. They might think that there is a right and wrong to what someone should do, think, or believe. Some people might think that if someone doesn't believe what they believe than they could be a threat.

I think that people can convince themselves that others are less than human through communication and superiority. Using the Holocaust as an example, antisemitism was getting worse as the government and the Germans were telling lies about the Jews to the Gentiles. Lack of accurate information reaching the Gentiles was a major reason. However, it's clear that the Gentiles were aware of what was happening to the Jews. I think that they took pride in the suffering of the Jews because it made them feel superior and better-liked. They believed the lies because doing so made them feel better about themselves. To know that they weren’t the issue. I’m sure at first they had to convince themselves that the violent screams and gunshots were normal. Sadly, soon these sounds were an everyday thing, not much convincing was needed.

The Jews in the factory had just heard they have finally made it to the end of their pain and suffering but they don't leave. The Jews didn't leave because they had no home or family to go back to. The Jews have been kept away from all other society for so long they had no way to communicate with their family. The Jews couldn't comprehend the fact they were set free because of how much torture and labor they have had to do to now be told it is all finally over. The Jews have seen the Nazis fleeing and now they know that they aren't being dictated anymore by the Germans.

Question 1 - How do you think people can convince themselves that a group of people are less than human?

I think that the reason people can convince themselves that a group of people are less than human is because of the fact that some people are different. When some people see others and notice that they are different than themselves, sometimes we tend to judge or hate when we don`t even know them. For example, Hitler wanted everyone to look the same, that is one of the many reasons that Hitler hated Jews. When people can start to look deeper than your differences most ties you can start to find things in common, and you can start to focus on who that person really is. Overall, I think it can be easy for some people to convince themselves that a group of people are less than human, but it would not be a good habit to get into.

Question 1- How do you think people can convince themselves that a group of people are less human?

I think that there were a lot of factors that went into people thinking that the jews we less human and one of them was fear and knowing that not joining the Nazi Party would make you an outcast or not enlisting would make people think less of you. Also their enforcement did not allow any Jew sympathizers, or people who did not think oppresion against the Jews was right,to walk around unpunished they made it clear that helping the Jews or anything of the like would result in certain death. Also a very important factor in people believing such propaganda is peer pressure and getting influenced by those around into joining the porpaganda until you believe it is true.

QUEST ONE
I think people can convince themselves that a group of people are less than human based on what society thinks. Everyone is just trying to fit in with people's ideas and beliefs. If someone in good power is able to convince people that a certain group of people are bad, everyone will think so. This is because the people in power over us shape and mold us into being more like them. We go along with it because we think that since this person is stronger than us or richer than us that they have complete control over us. We also exclude people that are different. Our mindset is that everyone has to be like us or look like us to be a person. When we aren't open-minded and accepting of differences, our ego can take control and make us think a certain way about people. The people were convincing themselves that the Jews were less human because of Hitler and the nazis. They set certain expectations that everyone should look the same, worship the same god, and have the same traditions. This completely closed everyone's mind because they were being molded by someone of such higher power over them.
