However, it can be also defined as a colorful cultural district, as Jazz was born there and music by street artists can be enjoyed on nearly every corner. Especially on Bourbon street and Royal street a flourishing nightlive can be experienced with a lot of bars and clubs. Another cultural aspect of the district is the Voodoo culture which can be experienced there through shops (e.g. Marie Laveau's House Of Voodoo), museums and walking tours.
The district is one of a kind with its diverse offers and the Voodoo culture.
The district once was a residential area, however it evolved and now its main purpose is the attraction of visitors. Some tourists might have the opinion that the USP especially on Bourbon street is, that it is legal there to drink alcohol openly on the street.
However, I rather think the unique culture of Voodoo and music in combination with the historic architecture is what makes the district unique and interesting.
Both tourists from the US (for example for bachelor(ette) parties) and international tourists are visiting this district. The district is located around the three main festival stages being Grosses Festspielhaus, Haus für Mozart, and Felsenreitschule. The Cathedral Square and small venues connect the highlights with each other.
During festival seasons, the events are not limited to the main stages but also in hidden locations popular performances appear which makes the district unique itself.
Apart from that, culinary highlights all over invite not only festival lovers but also well-known celebrities have dined-out in this area. One of the vibrant places is the Hagenauerstuben with its impressive outdoors and cozy bar atmosphere.
