we learn that jem is really interested in his father's work now that he has gotten older and is extremely involved in watching the case. He makes multiple remarks quietly such as saying, "we've got him," after atticus asks mr. Ewell what had he writes with. Jem also again gets annoyed with scout when she refuses to leave alone because Jem wants to stay rather than take Dill and Scout home. After this, then Jem says that its okay if they stay because they don't understand anyway. this is his excuse to stay and watch rather than to do the mature thing and take them home, showing that he is still immature to an extent.

In this chapter we learn that Jem is very mature for his age. He is very invested in the trial and his paying attention. On page 166, Scouts trying to talk to Jem and he says, "Hush, said Jem, Mr. Heck Tate's testifyin." This shows that Jem wanted to listen instead of talking with Scout. He's almost acting like a father figure telling Scout to be quiet.

I feel like the tone mimics the trial in the way that everyone thinks Atticus has no chance defending Tom Robinson, so this trial is basically a joke.
