We think we made a mixture because we combined water with sand. The sand did not dissolve into the water, so that makes it a mixture. A tool we could use would be a filter over a beaker. If we poured the mixture through the filter the water would go through but the sand would get trapped by the filter.

We added food coloring to water and then mixed in salt. Both the food coloring and the salt dissolved into the water. This is a solution.
A tool we could use to separate it would be the process of evaporation. The salt would be left behind.

WE mixed water, sand and some dirt. We think it is a mixture because nothing really dissolved into the water. The water did get dirty from some of the little bits of dirt but the sand and dirt settled to the bottom fast. We could use a strainer to our the mixture through to separate the dirt and sand.

We made a solution of sugar water by mixing water with sugar. It was a solution because all the sugar dissolved in the water. It looked the same throughout. We could let the water evaporate to separate the sugar from it.
