My Grandfather, after his father died, was sent to live with relatives at a farm near the border of Mexico in Arizona. After having moved back and forth between the farm and Mexico for several months, received a letter from his uncle in Los Angeles and moved there shortly.
Similar story for my Grandmother, as here mother died around 6 or 7 years old. In here early twenties she moved to here uncle's house in Los Angeles only intending to stay for a months, however remained there.
A very distant relative being Matthew Thornton having been born in the 1700's and emigrated the U.S. in 1714 at the age of three.

Both my Grandma and Grandpa grew up in an era where minorities were discriminated against heavily. And despite no incidents happening to them in particular, both received disadvantages educationally and financially as a result.
My distant ancestor, Matthew Thornton, had to grow up in a nation that had barely existed to the English speaking world up to that point. Once the nation was colonized and could function the British would begin to tax them for products from England. Thornton would go to be the last person to put his signature on the Declaration of Independence.
