Sergiovanni (2000) refers to leadership as stewardship which harmonizes with my Unitarian Universalism’s (UU) creed that I strive to follow. UUs are guided by seven principles and the first principle relates to stewardship: the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Steward leaders are caring and trusting individuals that lead to serve. They build trust with members of their community, including parents and community leaders, in order to work together, not to dominate. They lead the community not for their own self-interest, but for the good of the group (Peters, 2003). Although they are servant leaders, they expect a lot out of their community, not accepting failure.

Because of its continued inequalities and marginalization, social justice leaders must disrupt the traditional white, middle-upper class core instruction. They must strive to provide fair educational opportunities and end deficit thinking. This change can’t happen alone. Backing from parents and the community adds to the scaffolds of support needed within the system (Scanlan & Theoharis, 2015).

Not only should the leader provide encouragement to others, they will find support from them too, which in turn fosters future leaders. Changing this system will cause dissension as those with power resist losing any authority. The leader must be bold and have courage. They must rise to any occasion.
