Science is a knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through scientific method concerned with the physical world. One of the important aims of science education is to help the students to become responsible democratic citizens of the country. The responsibility of a science teacher is very crucial and critical. It is not only to teach facts, principles, and processes of science but also to facilitate students to discharge their social responsibilities and preserve the democracy of the nation as well. Students should learn how to appreciate how science and technology have developed over the years and it is in turn affecting diverse individuals, cultures, and societies. Science has positive and negative impacts that are incorporated into 4 sectors: POSITIVE IMPACTS #SCIENCE FOR ENVIRONMENT-Science has helped to combat various environmental concerns and to stop the degradation of the environment and to preserve natural resources. Examples 1. Use of plastics to produce biosynthetic fuels. 2. Development of waste-eating bugs. Development of air purifiers to decrease the level of pollutants released into the environment. 4. Greenhouse chambers for effectively protected plant growth 5. Development of solar panels and windmills providing ways to use non-renewable resources thus reducing excessive dependence on renewable resources. #SCIENCE FOR HEALTH-he health sector has been largely able to combat deadly viruses, bacteria, and diseases due to the integration of science with health.Examples 1. Development of Covid -19 vaccine.2. Formalization of the consumption of various nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, minerals, etc. in requisite amounts for a person to remain healthy.3. Antibiotic medicines to reduce the impact of several dangerous diseases such as syphilis, tuberculosis, leprosy.4. Development of several drugs for chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer. Radiotherapy has proved to be a potential therapy for removing tumours. #SCIENCE FOR PEACE-Science has indeed brought about an overall betterment of the life of humankind. The association of science in promoting peace and harmony is quite a significant one. Example1.	Reduction in the violence in mankind due to involvement of science and the association of a specified team of UNESCO in promoting peace.2.	Children need to be encouraged to appreciate and participate in the responsible use of science and technology for the benefit of society. They need to be made to realize the importance of the interconnection of peace, justice, and non-violence. They should be able to understand that all the developments in the field of science have been made to uplift humankind and make peace prevail all around. #SCIENCE FOR EQUITY-It acts as a foundational basis to promote and integrate equity by promoting Unity in Diversity in Schools and society.Examples1. Science as a tool to reduce the divisions in the society and help fight disparity and prejudice based on caste, religion gender differences.2. Use of science to teach the importance of differences in culture and beliefs.3. Use of ICT tools to bridge the gap between differences arising due to stratification in the society thus promoting gender sensitization.4. Equal treatment of students even during practical work and inclusive language use. NEGATIVE IMPACTS-Science is full of practical application and have some negative impacts as well. Some of the issues related to science are-1.	Air pollution and water pollution- The main sources of air pollution-related to technologies that emerged following the industrial revolution as the burning of fossil fuels, factories, power stations, mass agriculture, and vehicles. The consequences of air pollution include negative health impacts for humans and animals and global warming, whereby the increased amount of greenhouse gases in the air trap thermal energy in the Earth’s atmosphere and cause the global temperature to rise .2.	Depletion of natural resources - Resource depletion is another negative impact of technology on the environment. It refers to the consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished. Natural resources consist of those that are in existence without humans having created them and they can be either renewable or non-renewable. There are several types of resource depletion, with the most severe being aquifer depletion, deforestation, mining for fossil fuels and minerals, contamination of resources, soil erosion, and overconsumption of resources. These mainly occur as a result of agriculture, mining, water usage, and consumption of fossil fuels, all of which have been enabled by advancements in technology3.	Some of the negative impacts are greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, and release of toxic elements. Thus, Science is a field that is full of practical applications and have positive and negative impacts but if science is used in an economic way considering the side effects as well the negative impacts can be reduced and can make human life easier by making machine and advancing the technology.

Science plays a vital role as it helps society in making rational choices when confronted with possibilities and challenges. Science has a direct impact on the society in various ways:

1. On environment
We know the current climatic situation of earth and the scientific knowledge about it is what is making people come up with solutions like environment friendly energy resources. Many more environmental concerns like pollution, water scarcity etc are being addressed because of science.

2. On health
Health of people is majorly impacted by Science as professionals like doctors and scientists do a deep scientific research for better health solutions. One current example is coming up with the vaccine for corona virus.

3. On agriculture
Our society depends on the agricultural practices for food and through science only, new methods and techniques are employed for better agriculture. Eg. The method of drip irrigation is used to minimize water usage without compromising crop quality.

4. For industrialisation
Industrialisation affects the standard of living of the society and it requires all kinds of machinery and methods based upon scientific knowledge. The manual labor has been replaced by machinery which saves time as well as effort.

5. For peace and equity
Science research requires people to work together to create something innovative or bring solutions.it sometimes involve people from different parts of the world and thus promotes peace globally. For eg. Different countries might work together to find the cure for a disease. Or a satellite launched by ISRO is not just beneficial to India but to the whole world. Also, as people work together, they develop respect for each other's views and opinions thus developing peace and equity.

By Muskan Baldodia
B.ed.
IMPACT OF SCIENCE IN THE SOCIETY:SCIENCE HAS CHANGED OUR LIFE IN MANY WAYS.SOME OF THE POSITIVE IMPACTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: IT HAS CHANGED OUR LIFE STYLE – TO BE MORE HEALTH CONSCIOUS, OUR WAY AT LOOKING AT THE NATURE – TO UNDERSTAND . TO BE AWARE OF THE ECOLOGICAL BALANCE OF NATURE, IT HAS LEAD TO IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTH AND SANITATION- TO PRACTICE CLEANLINESS, TO DO AWAY WITH THE TABOO OF MENSTRUATION, TO STAY HEALTHY, TO HAVE THE RIGHT DOSE OF MEDICINE FROM THE DOCTORS WHEN NEEDED. IT HAS LED TO CHANGE IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM THROUGH STUDYING THE PYSCHOLOGY OF HUMAN MIND AT DIFFERENT AGE. SUPPORTS COLLABORATIVE WORK IN THE SOCIETY AND COUNTRY AS A WHOLE. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST TO BE A GOOD HUMAN BEING -THROUGH THE SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS FOR A HEALTHY HEART AND HEALTHY MIND ! ALSO CONNECTS US WITH OUR NEAR AND DEAR ONES , WITH PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD IN JUST A CLICK AWAY THEREBY INCREASING OUR SOCIAL LIFE !SOME OF THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF SCIENCE ARE AS FOLLOWS :IT HAS MADE US OVER DEPENDENT ON TECHNOLOGIES WHICH IS AFFECTING OUR LIFE STYLE VIA SEDENTARY WORK AND TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME AFFECTING OUR HEALTH . TAKING US AWAY FROM PEOPLE LIVING WITH US , NO DOUBT REDUCING THE DISTANCE FROM OUR NEAR AND DEAR ONES WHO ARE AWAY FROM US. IT HAS MADE US PLAY GOD WITH THE ENVIRONMENT , WITH ANIMALS , WITH PLANTS THEREBY AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT BADLY. IT IS HIGH TIME THAT WE TAKE AN ACTION TOWARDS SAVING OUR ENVIRONMENT. IT HAS LED TO DEVELOPMENT OF BIO-WEAPONS WHICH IS A THREAT TO MANKIND. IT HAS LED TO MANY MULTI RESISTANT BACTERIA WHICH CAN WIPE THE WHOLE POPULATION IF NO REMEDIES ARE FOUND SOON. IT HAS LED TO DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUNG GENERATIONS . NATURE HAS PROVIDES US SCIENCE WHICH HAS BOTH ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES IT IS UPTO US TO USE IT WISELY FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE SOCIETY.

The evolution is something which common in both of them - the society and the science. the way an individual perceives thinks or works is all dependent on how the impact of science has taken place. there are many scientific facts that help in our daily life. science is meant to improve the standard of living. everything in our life is science for example - the coffee machine ( its mechanism) , the dishwasher, the boiling effect the chemical change - everything is science. society is now dependent on science even for the simple tasks . science and technology go hand-in-hand in order to make life easier. these days we have E-Shopping, E-Pay etc. science influences society through its knowledge and world view. scientific knowledge and the procedures used by the scientists influence the way many individuals in society think about themselves, others and the environment. the impact of science on society is neither entirely beneficial nor entirely detrimental . science paves a way to think in appropriate direction for instance- people usually say that we should not eat during an eclipse the scientific reason to it is that during eclipse microbial growth increases because of which people are advised not to eat. anything when given a scientific reasoning seems more logical and is easier to understand. modern agriculture makes it easy to cultivate ,eat evolution in medicines makes it easy to be used in many modern medical applications . however, when children are exposed to laptops screens ,phones and television .this has changed how they used to interact and play outside .nowadays children prefer to communicated through text messages rather than communicating in person. the balance is yet to be maintained by the society.
SHAGUNN RASTOGI, Section -B

A society with knowledge applied and explored is the one that develops. Civilisations have risen and fallen and have had their own approach and understanding of the concepts of nature and with them had risen concepts of science trying to explain the various phenomenon of nature.
Science as a word came quite later on and only in recent centuries did its disciplines formed.
But science as a whole has its impacts on the various parts of life and society. These factors are what all together forms and changes societies both positively and negatively.
Factors such as the Environment, Industry, peace, Health, Agriculture, Education, Equity, etc.
Science has as much of an impact on society as society has on it. after all the development in scientific fields is regulated by the societies demands and needs. Society has accepted it and thus it progresses. If its experimentation and explanation still considered as taboo or black magic ,etc then science as a field would not have been able to develop. Whereas science helps the society to rise above superstitions, to reach beyond what they have created as their limit and to make amends with the earth and nature as we have polluted it. Science helps us rise above from the bias of colour, gender and race by providing facts genetics and experimental and otherwise. It helps develop technologies that ease our living and increases our surviving chances. It provides us with a more humane perspective of humanity as we work our way from basic survival to explorative living.
But as any coin it has two sides to it and what can be developed for good can also be mutilated for bad. The very use of pesticides, chemicals , etc to create artificial equipment or extract something from nature can produce harmful non- biodegradable residues. The biological sciences which pioneers the medical fronts can also increase the lethality of the strains and and produce bio weapons. Just see the case of the atomic bomb where the same principles are used to generate electric energy for cities can destroy those very cities by some alterations, harming peace.
Similarly using genetics to understand the need of genetic variation to produce superior crops and prevent inbreeding in cattle and humans alike can be misused to promote euthenics and such.
Science and society do go hand in hand in their development but a tandem balance of ethics, values and regulations should always be maintained.
- Taneesha Sethi ( section A)

Science has become an integral part of our society. It plays a crucial role in making our lives comfortable, artificial intelligence is the greatest example as when we listen to online music, do online shopping or search for nearby restaurant artificial intelligence is made use of. In-fact science is taught to students so that they might develop a scientific attitude and contribute something to the society. Studying sciences also helps people to make rational choices.
The major impacts are -
1. Science for environment - Negative impacts
The major impacts on environment include air and water pollution, depletion of natural resources . With the onset of industrialization there have been great losses in our forest reserves, massive habitat destruction for the construction of industries etc. Further the wastes released by these industries causes air and water pollution and also causes harm to marine ecosystem.
some positive impacts include- Use of plastics for biosynthetic fuel production and introduction of e-vehicles which causes less air pollution.
2. Science for industrialization - Some negative impacts include deforestation, soil erosion which can lead to natural calamities like flood, drought etc. As trees plays a vital role in holding water in cases of flood so with deforestation this retaining capacity is lost.
3. Science for health - Scientific principles, theories are made use of in health sector like the development of vaccines - Covid 19 vaccines. Development of antibiotic vaccines for preventing the spread of diseases like cholera etc.
Some negative impacts include -
Science is also being used for bio-wars or bioweapons are made through it in which microbes are made use of to cause misery and grief among people.
4. Science for disarmament - It has been used to bring about harmony amongst the mankind. The gravest problem is the development of new types of weapons, and yet neither the official policies of governments nor the proposals of unofficial bodies seem to envisage this problem. It is quite useless to abolish old armaments if new and more deadly types of weapon are to be produced by the application of scientific research to such an end. It is also unrealistic to believe that the process of technological innovation can be frozen to prevent its military application.

Therefore, science responds to the needs and interests of the society in which it is practiced and developed.

SAMIKHYA OJHA SEC B
