Listening activities always challenge students and they easily feel demotivated when they feel incompetent in listening activities. To avoid any kind of demotivation I always try to make them feel comfortable before the task.

Today, I realised that there are several easy ways to comfort the students before beginning a listening activity. The “Text with lies” activity was a good way to involve the students and get feedback from them at first hand.

Focusing on the instruction part was very important because there may be students who cannot understand the task.

To sum up, it was a very interesting and fruitful day for me.

1. When it comes to teaching speaking in English, one of the most common problems I encounter is lack of motivation and confidence of the students. Many students avoid speaking and prefer to be silent.

2. When I return to my school I will definitely try out the Web 2.0 tools. Flipgrid looks very promising.

''Reading Race'' was a really nice activity. I think I will modify it a little bit so that it covers also the other skills.

While monitoring or giving feedback there are some important points that should be taken into consideration. Correct monitoring leads to correct feedback.

Writing in a foreign language is the most difficult and a productive skill and I believe one shouldn't set boundaries and let the students use their imaginary power at least until they reach a certain level. After that one might limit the task with some instructions. Finding some interesting topics is very important to raise the motivation to write.

I'm pretty sure that one of the things that will be discussed in the PDC sessions is motivating the students and prompt them to write.

Do you agree with the idea that '' A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit''?

When it comes to teaching grammar there are a lot of contrary ideas whether grammar should be taught ''the tradional way'', implicitly, or that teaching grammar isn't even necessary.

When you acquire a language you don't deal with the grammar actually, but when it comes to learning/teaching it, there may be some situtations where you have to use different techniques and methods. Depending on the age, level and conditions, a mixture of all the teaching settings should be applied to achieve the maximum efficiency.

When it comes to vocabulary, the most effective way is to give them in a context, visual/audial style or storify and combine them all together.

I think teachers in my disctrict believe that formal assessments are enough. The main reason is they are too lazy for formative assessments due to fact that formative assessments need more effort. Another reason might be that the educational system forces the teachers to stick to traditional assessments.

Being a PDC for English Teachers in my local context will be a good opportunity to stay in contact with my collegues, to share our problems and also achievements and provide a support line for any instance where people can exchange experiences and find solutions.

Formative assessments sound nice but don't you think that they require a certain level of readiness?
