So, some crazy guy a long time ago decided everything pertained to sex. Therefore, his obvious conclusion about dreams also included sex. He said everything in dreams were symbols, and most all the symbols stood for something sexual. He believed dreams were our subconscious fulfilling wishes that we couldn't live out in our waking hours (such as killing our father or having intercourse with our mother). So yeah, he was a bit strange.

Great.
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep occurs throughout the night at intervals. This is when most of the time when people dream. People dream every night, but they don't always remember it. Their heart rate and breathing increases, and their eyes rapidly flicker back and forth as if watching a TV show. This occupies about 20% of an adult's total sleeping time.
