Janet Mills signed the bill Monday with the goal of limiting plastic pollution. Retail groups in several other states have supported efforts to eliminate plastic bags. Maine will allow stores to charge at least 5 cents for recyclable paper or reusable plastic bags.
“Plastic bag manufacturers say such bans will only lead to thicker, reusable bags in landfills.” This sounds just like what we just listened to from the npr Podcast about “Are plastic bag bans garbage?” So as a result does that mean that the plastic bag ban taking place in April will only harm the planet more or less is the real question.

It also contains pros and cons to all three of the groups. Each group is put in a certain section. For each material that is used in the bag, they provide a few bullet points describing what material the bag is made of. Following that are “advantages” and “disadvantages” of the product used. It explains for instance, how non organic cotton and canvas bags are responded for 16% of the world's pesticide usage.
http://www.allaboutbags.ca/typesofbags.html#fabric

Since plastic bags have been invented (just after wwII) they have grown increasing popular. The UN made an estimation between 1 -5 trillion bags are made each year. “At the lowest figure that’s about 2 million every minute” claims https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/04/plastic-bag-bans-kenya-to-us-reduce-pollution/
As more states start to ban them new research is showing with other side effects of banning plastic bags, they may be more useful to keep. Although it is a curiosity that if we have research proving that the plastic bags are the better alternative, why more and more states and countries are continuing to ban them

Right now they are putting the in landfills but it’s not going to work because plastic will not break down. In it, the company explains that all plastics wether they are biodegradable or not, need to be put into a waste management system in order to prevent the littering of the plastics. They also explain that these plastics need to be reused, and a way to recycle all of these plastics need to be discovered.
https://www.umsicht.fraunhofer.de/content/dam/umsicht/en/documents/publications/2018/position-paper-recycling-bioplastics.pdf

They also explain that if we don’t put a fee on paper bags also then people won’t be encouraged to start using reusable bags instead so it’s most likely making the environment worse with all the paper used. In addition to this they go over how the ban of plastic bags will cause other plastic products to be bought at an increased rate which still wouldn’t be helping the environment in the end.
