In 1943 the First Infantry Division took part of the invasion of Sicily, which was teamed up with the U.S Seventh Army. (another division) Due to the fact that the First Infantry Division were usually the first ones to land so they saw/dealt with the most losses, eventually they broke the Italian and German defenses and moved towards the center of Sicily where they lost more than half their numbers/powers. The First Infantry Division was also part of the first wave of soldiers to arrive on the Omaha beach on D-day.

The First Infantry was known by one of two nicknames, either the more famous "The big red one" or "The Bloody First." The infantry got its nicknames because The First Infantry was the very first infantry created (hents the one) and big red stood for first engaged into a bloody situation. This also relates to how The First Infantry got its nickname "The Bloody First" because its the first respondents(wave) that sees the most death and pain.

The Insignia or military badge of the First Infantry Division was a pentagon shape (like a backwards house) with a blood red 1 sown into the center. The Insignia also ties into the First Infantry's nicknames. For example, one of the nicknames the Division is called the "Big Red One" in the Insignia a big red one is dead center of the insignia. The reason the one was red is because red stands for power, revolution, courage, and domination, which is what the Division is all about, they respond first and they must have to be courage, and powerful.
