Bundling Standards in Iowa Middle Schools

The State of Iowa adopted Next Generation Science Standards as its science standards. The standards adopted for grades 6, 7 and 8 were placed specifically into each grade and different from the recommended middle school course I, II, and III at the national level. However, educators have the flexibility to arrange the standards in any order within a grade level to suit the needs of students and science programs (Iowa Core). Within the middle school grades for Iowa, the standards take an integrated approach, therefore schools that had typically done physical science in 6th, life in 7th, and earth in 8th needed to dive deeply into professional development in order to create coherent integrated units.

When NGSS released their bundles, we were given an idea on how to integrate the three domains of science into one year. However, the problem was that the national NGSS standards were not in the same grade as what Iowa adopted. This put me to work:

Here, you see the SEPs paired with the PE’s per grade level in Iowa middle schools:

Once that work was laid out, I was able to crosswalk the national bundles with Iowa grade specific courses to create possible Iowa NGSS bundles. You can see that document here.
