Gwacheon Park

I had not thought of the idea of dual citizenship for this assignment. I like the spin it puts on this by involving another citizenship. This park seems to be a means of engaging citizens to be thankful for their citizenship. I find myself wondering if the sister city of Gwacheon and Airdrie struck up this relationship out of some ties formed in the Korean War. Favourite choice # 1.

Dog Sign

It’s kind of funny to me – I think most people would say that they have some connection to nature, even though most people fail to get out into the outdoors to really experience it. When I recently flew back to Calgary from Montreal, I noticed how small the city was among such a vast open space. Your section on opportunities made me think about what kind of field trip opportunities would arise that could help students discover how much nature is part of their identity as a Canadian.

Living Room

I like the tipi in the living room. This is a mostly typical setting with a few caveats, which of course make up this piece of identity. Symbols like these will become part of your daughter’s identity, I’m sure, without her conscious knowing.

Back Yard

This photo and write-up are good examples of how we as male father figures see our role. Your explanation highlights how positive male role models can make a big difference in kids’ lives. Obviously female role models have just as much impact (if not more), but in sometimes different ways. The way we interact with our families and friends definitely shapes who we are. Favourite choice #2.

Picture 1: It is a really interesting park. I like the connection between the Korean totems and the Aboriginal peoples in Canada. This certainly would spark students’ curiosity and broader their understanding about different cultures from the past and around the world. Additionally, the link with the Pokémon Go connects with a mainstream and novel activity that resonates with many students, trigging their interest into their learning process.

Picture 2: This picture capture in a very simple way the relation with people and nature, share of the land with others and sense of community. Young learners might understand citizenship as the right to vote and the responsibility to obey the law, but we know that it is a far too narrow view of what means to be a citizen. In this case is evident the law aspect of the sign, but usually people see the lack of picking after your dog as a lack of integrity. Whoever left a collective space dirty or messy shows little sense of community and engagement. Any children can understand the responsibility behind protecting and keeping their neighborhood clean and safe. This picture can open a discussion about how to participate in our community, importance of collective agreements, law, respect, use of common space and nature.

Picture 3: Where we live tells a lot about ourselves. The place we call home triggers many feelings, ideas and memories. In order to understand our identity, our house and our things can be as important as our values, traditions and everything we care about. In social studies, students learn about different cultures, countries, and ways of life. As we discuss these differences from the point of view of their living rooms, it can bring a lot of discussion about them. Why do you have two couches and more chairs than the number of your family members? Because you welcome others into your home, to share moments, stories, beer and connect with your friends and relatives. No doubt, our home tells a lot about our personalities and identity.

Picture 4: Looks like everyone were having a great time. Family is without question a very important factor in order to shape our identity. Also, the celebration of birthdays is a critical event in peoples’ lives, especially children. For some cultures when people reach a particular age this is a huge milestone in their lives. In some Latin America countries when women reach fifteen years they celebrate their Quinceañera, one of the most important celebrations for a young woman. Also, this picture shows the love, care and respect between an adult and several children, as they play together as equals.
