Shakespeare’s Sonnets 55 and 73, along with Hamlet’s famous soliloquy, all grapple with the inevitability of death and the human desire to leave something lasting behind. In Sonnet 55, poetry is seen as a powerful force that can preserve memory beyond physical decay, while Sonnet 73 reflects on the quiet acceptance of aging and the deepening of love in the face of loss. Hamlet, on the other hand, confronts the fear and uncertainty of death, questioning whether it is better to endure life’s suffering or escape through death. Together, these texts invite us to consider what gives life meaning and whether legacy can truly defy time and mortality.

Austin Smith

I think Shakespeare's argument for poetry and writing in the world lasts longer than things like statues is a good one. We can read the sonnets today while so many of the noble houses, buildings, or statues from then are gone. I think poetry and other art forms still have similar power today, but we have different forms to access poetry than at the time of Shakespeare. I think books, films, and songs may still live on even if people die, all thanks to the magic of stitch and digital remaking. Digital seems to have a longer life than material copies because digital can be saved and distributed in so many ways. I think words and art stay alive a lot longer than objects and other things one can touch.

One thing that stood out to me was how creative Shakespeare’s wordplay was, even during a time that seemed boring or serious in history.

In both Sonnet 73 and Hamlet, the main characters think a lot about getting older and dying. Shakespeare uses things like old, crumbling buildings in the sonnet and a skull in Hamlet to show how people feel sad when they lose something or someone. These images help show that loss and death are a natural part of life that everyone has to go through -Maclen H
