Working in groups is a creative and fun way for students to engage in different kinds of activities with one another and share their ideas and observations, while working individually allows for students' to strongly focus on the problem or activity at hand without any distractions. We will be introduced to learning about basic geometric shapes and their names.

To understand shapes, we will need to understand the history of geometry. Geometry is estimated to date back to 3,000 B.C. to the ancient Egyptians. Egyptians used an earlier sense of geometry for many reasons including: constructing pyramids and astronomy. It was because of their pyramids, they later began to extend on their knowledge and create pyramids with four triangular faces and a square base. However, a turning point for understanding geometry occurred when Euclid wrote a text titled" Elements". He was essentially able formalize planar geometry from the first five postulates in " Elements". Another founder of the advancement of geometry was Rene Descartes who discovered coordinate geometry, which eventually lead to the discovery of physics and calculus.

Recognizing how we interact and understand shapes is very important because shapes create the dimensions of the world we live in. It is important for students to learn about shapes because it can benefit them in their career field. For example, shapes are crucial for people who have jobs as architects, construction workers, or even teachers.

This is an example activity we would do to explore the various types of shapes and their names in the classroom. We would first pair up in groups of two and then we would do a scavenger hunt. We will first need our paper that has the names of all the different shapes we will be searching for. This can include items in the shape of a triangle, circle, rectangle, or square. We will have a section on the paper that lists the four different shapes. When we find an item that has the shape ( for example, a chalk board eraser in the shape of a rectangle) we will write on our paper what the item is and what shape it has. Whoever finds the specific number of shapes the fastest, wins.
