Question 1: Are we visible on campus? Have you seen our logo around campus? Where?

Online?

Pink tshirts

Often not included (on screens etc)

Students not heard of DMU Local

A consideration needs to be made on physical visibility. It is a lot easier to change our team name, brand, logos, messaging online. Offline - the pink tshirts are a great example of how fast the department/unit has changed/moved on and how difficult it is to change.

Question 2: Are we known as a team?

By wider university teams?
By the local community?
By students?

By wider university teams? – Errr in some capacity but most refer to us as Square Mile still and I don’t think they know the extent of our work.

By the local community? In those areas that we work with and schools, yes. Again, I think there is some identity issues.

By students? – Some, not all. Most will hear about us at the start of their journey at DMU but they are bombarded with information and so think we need to continue to spread the message.

- linking to the point above, the only time I have physically seen/noticed local on campus was during the freshers activities fair. The beginning of the year is super important, but continuing that contact and continuing to be visible throughout the year is just as, if not more important

Language that we use - public engagement or DMU Local?

Question 3: How do we advocate for and share our work? Any ideas?

Drop in sessions for academics/wider departments – case studies of what we have done already. Staff induction pack?

- Focus on faculty engagement. Here is where we have a lot of advocates based on previous work. Having drop in sessions, highlight series and discussion panels from faculty experts - will all help push DMU Locals activities/brand out to students and staff from faculties/schools where we have less engagement.

Student Staff Committees - We can attend these (after Chair's would have agreed) and talk to course reps about that we do and ask them how they'd like to hear from us etc.

Course reps/ Peer mentors/Ambassadors- can make us 'visible' to fellow students

Personal Tutors - we can brief personal tutors (by offering School training sessions) on what we do which will then help them better support their tutees

Announcements - via admin teams in faculties/schools (or ask them to give us access) to share with students on Blackboard, and if there is a networking service like Yammer for staff

Share best practice - we can get together with teams like DMU Global internally or other unis we collaborate with and talk about how to improve internal visibility and communication

Welcome/induction week - have interactive events (escape rooms/ donut and coffee sessions), stall on campus, attend induction events that are organised by programmes just briefly to introduce the team and work we do

Regarding public visibility--- invite internal/external speakers for free events organised by us that cover themes that are important (after working hours always work better for people who work during the day) and related to the topic of discussion get in touch with civic organisations and groups who will then invite their members to events

Blackboard notifications

Screens in student common areas

Careers fairs – while students attend these fairs to learn more about graduate employers volunteering can play huge part in their employability journey. Students need to know the impact that volunteering has on their skills development, how it can enhance their CV and career prospects.

Take part in student inductions

Team could host online or on campus conference or workshop where team, partners and colleagues from different universities could share good practice

SIE fair – all teams, current partners, alumni, past participants can take part. It could be open to all students, staff and members of local organisations that would like to learn more about us and we do.

Re-launch/ reintroduce the team campaign – new name, new branding, highlight aims and values, introduce team, showcase partners and projects (and benefits of those projects to all stakeholders) you are running and areas you aspire to grow into

Offer some sort of training or workshop that would attract members of local organisations. University holds pools of knowledge and intellectual recourse which could be shared. For example: marketing, digital skills, media and communications, entrepreneurship, academic writing, project management, bid writing, negotiation, public speaking or other. This would not only be great opportunity for partners or potential partners to develop or improve their skills, expand their network, but also engage with the team and DMU. I think it could help raise teams profile and could be another way to support local organisations.
