On the first day, Britain had a rough time, losing more than 57,000 soldiers on the first day and didn't make a lot of progress. However, their French allies made better advances, losing less men. Artillery was a key part of the British offense, but it failed to break through the German barbed wire, failing to reach the German trenches.
