How do language and culture manifest in the comics we've created?

We aimed to incorporate the modern language of two chosen groups: African Americans and Koreans.

The N-word is a racial slur used against Black people, with its usage contentious even among Black individuals due to its history of racism and oppression. In Korean, the word "nega" means "you," highlighting how different languages can carry out distinct meanings and intentions. While some Black individuals may reclaim the N-word, others find it offensive, contrasting with its casual use in Korean culture.

The comic strip also shows Korean culture and features the Hanbok as traditional clothing, whereas African Americans' attire varies widely based on diverse heritages.

In the comic’s scenario, a misinterpretation arose between the two races due to differences in their languages. This is a common instance in reality. However, they were able to resolve this misunderstanding through communication, which is an essential aspect in developing cultural competence – a primary concept mentioned in the module.

Furthermore, we wanted to depict how openness plays a significant role in fostering appreciation for cultures different from our own. The Black character's curiosity about his Korean friend's language led him to seek clarification. Despite their racial differences, the Korean friend was eager to share his language and culture, demonstrating that he did not let the gap between their races hinder him from sharing his cultural heritage.
