Auschwitz Birkenau - Concentration Camp

Auschwitz was one of the biggest concentration camps in Germany and was notably the most horrifying. Jewish people (and others) who were brought to the camp, were forced to do extremely laborious work with almost no sleep, food, or water. Members of the camp were forced to wear striped clothing and have their hair shaved off. Women with earrings or anyone with gold/silver teeth had them ripped out for the precious metals. When people could no longer work to the standards of the Nazis, they would be killed by machine gun or gas chamber, then their bodies would be burned in giant crematoriums.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was a patriarchal society. Women had almost no rights in this community and they were mainly utilized for babies. Going to church was mandatory for Puritans and missing was a punishable offense. People would be put into stocks for hours in constant public mockery. Some punishments of the Puritans were very severe, children were murdered if they disrespected their parents.

From 1976-1983, the "Dirty War" Raged in Argentina. During this time, it is estimated that up to 30,000 people were killed or 'disappeared' by the militaristic government in fear of losing their power to revolts by the citizens. Torture was used as the main method of interrogating these people to gain any information they had about any resistance to the government. Newborns were also taken from mothers to be raised in households who favored the communist government in hopes to raise children who supported the government wholeheartedly.

In 1966, Decree 770 was passed in Romania. Before the decree was passed, Romania had been one of the most liberal European countries in terms of abortions which were really common. When the decree was passed by Nicolae Ceausescu in hopes to increase birth rates, Romanian women were forced to have children and abortion and contraceptives were outlawed. Many of the children born as a result of this decree could not be properly taken care of so they were malnourished or put into state-run orphanages where the conditions were terrible. Many women tried to receive sketchy unregulated abortions which caused illness, infertility, and death.

The Holocaust was the genocide of European Jews during WWII. The Nazi regime in Germany murdered over six million Jews across Europe by means of mass shooting, extermination camps, riots, and gas chambers. The Holocaust happened slowly after Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933. The government slowly took rights away from the Jewish people until eventually they weren't even treated as people anymore. Kristallnacht was the night that the widespread physical violence against the Jews started. A young Jewish man murdered Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, after his family was killed by Nazis. Adolf Hitler used this attack to fuel anti-semitism within the German people.

Khomeini, Iran's former dictator, had a vicious regime. This group committed many human rights abuses including: false imprisonment, torture, sexual violence and cold blooded executions. Anyone taken to prison was subject to constant torture. Prisoners were whipped on the soles of their feet, beaten, and hung from the ceiling by their arms. They could also face time in "the coffin," which was a sensory deprivation box, for hours. Families were forced to pay for the bullets used to kill their children and parents were tortured in front of their children as well. These atrocities haven't long passed either, these events all happened in the 1980s.

Mao Zeddong, China's former supreme leader, was a vicious dictator. Chairman Mao published a book of his thoughts called 'the Little Red Book,' which was the book available to the public to read. The communist government chased down women and murdered their babies. They also forced women to marry members of the communist parties. Mao also launched a secret ring of citizen spies to catch people who weren't loyal to Communist China. The Chinese people were encouraged to betray their own family to show their dedication to Chairman Mao and his evil government.

Jospeh Stalin came to power on April 3, 1922 and was a very harsh dictator. Almost any crime committed during Stalin's reign was somehow interpreted as treason against the USSR and therefore punishable by death. Art, education, literature, and science were all placed under close surveillance by the secret police and were majorly suppressed. Many prominent scientists and scholars were deemed as "wreckers," or enemies of the people, and were imprisoned or sent to the Gulag. The Gulag was the government agency which sent over 18,000,000 people to forced labor camps throughout the USSR where millions died.
