Many of the children born as a result of this decree could not be properly taken care of so they were malnourished or put into state-run orphanages where the conditions were terrible. The government slowly took rights away from the Jewish people until eventually they weren't even treated as people anymore. Kristallnacht was the night that the widespread physical violence against the Jews started. A young Jewish man murdered Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, after his family was killed by Nazis. Families were forced to pay for the bullets used to kill their children and parents were tortured in front of their children as well. During his reign, thousand of people were tortured, in prisoned, tortured, and disappeared by the regime. Over 200,000 people were exiled from Chile. Art, education, literature, and science were all placed under close surveillance by the secret police and were majorly suppressed. Many prominent scientists and scholars were deemed as "wreckers," or enemies of the people, and were imprisoned or sent to the Gulag.
