WEEK 2

How is your progress?
This week, classes like Concept Art Architecture gets a little harder to grasp but I manage to finish watching all of the videos in the class. Yet, I am still practicing my using the complex perspective grids and golden ratio. I still need to come up a storyboard for the upcoming class.

Points to remember from week 2!
Concept Art Architecture heavily highlights the 3D perspecitives as they had emphasized on 1 Point, 2 Points and 3 Points Perspectives. In the projects being done, most of it uses the 3 points perspectives. Landscaping prioritized depth, scale and atmospheric perspective. Mood and Story compliments in making the piece believe-able.

The storyboard class gave us tips on creating a concept of how an animation layout would be presented and it is as a guidline before one does an animation. The tips are: Warming up prior drawing, do rough sketch, use grid persepctive, use simple heads, emphasize on the eye expression and mouth shapes.

Your feelings & thoughts
<del>Honestly I have strayed away from humanity </del> I feel very overwhelmed by the architecture art class since his technique is a little too advance but I'd like to try his techniques nonetheless. I feel happy on having this opportunities to further detailing my art skills.

1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
Planning. These two classes taught me a way to carefully plan out how my art would be and giving a chance to put more detailing within it.

Any difficulties/concerns? How I cope is by practicing more and focus on the task I am doing.

2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Overwhelmed and Fun

Your plan for next week (Week 3)
A full week of Animation Class!

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wn63TYMF--X5q_64mohmWrWnjWhxQ-u4?usp=sharing

2. How is your progress?
The progress runs smoothly. This week I learned about body proportion, anatomy and gestures. It seems to be easy at first when I watch the lecture, but when I do the hands-on practice, it turns out differently 🤣🤣. In this lecture, I applied the knowledge from last week about shapes. Turns out all these shapes like square, round and cylinder can be used to draw the human body. I also found out that an artist also needs to learn about muscle groups and their name, and looks like they knew more than me hahaha. The most challenging part about this lecture is on stabilizing the left and right parts of the body and make sure it is in the same proportion for both sides. I need to practice more on these parts.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
Points to remember from week 2 is about proportion. While every person differs in body shape and size, the proportion of each person is the same. Like how to compare the ratio of the head and the torso. Commonly, head size is used as the point of reference to determine the size of each body part.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I feel determined this time as it seems that I improved in terms of drawing shapes, especially circles where I find it difficult to master last week. I also gain a bit of confidence.
. Practices make perfect

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I can start practising drawing proportions from now. I also find that it is difficult to draw the left and right parts of the body in the same proportion and shapes so I thought to emphasize more on that.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
I find out that looking at a computer screen for a long time can make my eyes feel dry. To cope with it, I take a rest for every 1 hour.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Quite challenging

8. Your plan for next week
Practices gesture and draw various poses and face

WEEK 2

2. How is your progress?
Week 2 is all about realism, photorealism and casting shadows in order to make a drawing as realistic as possible.
I went through the notes provided on Drawspace about guidelines on drawing faces and videos on how to locate light, reflection and shadow on a drawing.

3. Points to remember from week 2
Some points to remember from Week2 is using basic guidelines to sketch infant and adult face and correctly place eyes nose and lips. I also learned that different guidelines are used for adult face and infant. After knowing where to place face features correctly I learned about different eye types, sketching and shading nose and lips.

4. My feelings and thoughts
Week 2 assignments are totally different from week 1 because now the lesson focus more on precision and realism. I had to visit back my week 1 lessons about shading and blending again and again to create almost perfect shadings. I was not confident enough to proceed with eye drawings because it really looked nearly impossible to draw. But I had to push myself and strive to achieve this week's goal.

5. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now
One good thing from what I did that I can practice now is working on basic sketching and shading skills. I had to ensure that I can really make a smooth shading because it helped me in drawing realistic face features

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
I have to admit it was never easy to achieve photorealism. Locating light and shadow was another exhausting task. One wrong stroke while drawing eyelash or eyebrow can ruin the whole eye, shading teeth was another burdensome task🥲.Yet I managed to draw a somehow convincing photorealistic drawing after multiple failures😝😝 Besides, convincing myself was even hard. I had to be really patient and had to TRUST THE PROCESS.

7. Two words to describe elective posting progress so far
PERSEVERANCE AND INSPIRING

8.

2. How is your progress?

So far so good. Everything is on track and I have finished watching the videos on Udemy! I have learned isometric and perspective drawings. Basically it is like drawing buildings with the help of the drawing guide feature which makes the process easier. It is fun to learn and have an idea of how people usually draw this.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Remember to toggle on “drawing assist” before drawing the isometric and perspective drawings to make sure that I can draw straight lines easily.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I was enjoying so far. Isometric and perspective drawings are quite interesting and I am looking forward to creating simple animations.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I tried out new brushes on my own and I love the effects. I used “flare” and “glimmer” under the luminance category. I should try out more brushes and find out when is it best to use them instead of just using the common brushes over and over again just because I am more familiar with them.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The only difficulty I’m facing so far is the lack of creativity. I do not really have much ideas on what to draw.

2. How is your progress?
In week 2, my progress was pretty much more than the previous week. In week 2 I have learnt on how to create split colour text, how to colour grade images with gradient map and with different types of blend mode and how to create my own preset (filter) in Photoshop. Split colour text is basically creating two different colours to a text (to create a gradient) and applying stroke (outline) to the particular text. Apart from applying gradient and stroke I also learnt how to apply gradient and solid colours to a background. The second lesson was colour grading an image with gradient map. This lesson was practically fun because I got to learn how to apply more than 2 colours to an image and play along with the percentage of the colours applied to the image. All these were done by using the presets that I created by myself in Photoshop.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
Some points to remember from week 2 will be the usage of “fx” icon to apply stroke and gradient overlay if split colour text were to be created and usage of “ new adjustment layer” icon in order to apply gradient map if colour grading and image were to be created. These icons can be found at the Layers panel.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I had so much fun learning this new lessons on my week 2 because it was very interesting and I managed to create many gradient map and split colour texts as part of my activity and also homework.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
I can apply gradient map on photos that I have taken by myself and post it in my social media.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
The only difficulty I experienced was creating my own preset (filter). There are few steps that need to be followed to create it and my lessons for the week was to implement my own preset for both the text and the image. I was manage to follow the steps accordingly as my instructor was patience enough to repeat the steps for me slowly and every time I forget the steps.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
‘Interesting’ and ‘Creative’

8.

Hello, my name is Shasi A/L Mogan @ Mohan, A167569, and today’s date is 12/8/2021.

My progress from first week to second week is that I learned how to create a gradient overlay over a text creating a split text appearance. I also learned how to do gradient mapping over an image creating my own preset for the image.

Most important points I had to remember from my 2nd week of classes is to not use the presets that are already available and to always create my own preset to gradient map an image, only then it will look more original and more creative. Other than that, I would need to remember to correctly place the location whenever I want to create a gradient overlay split text as well as check the thickness when applying stroke to the text.

My feelings and thoughts regarding the second week of classes, I am starting to feel more comfortable since I got used to the tools and its functions. Now I am even more excited than last week and can’t wait to know what else I can do with Adobe Photoshop.

The one good thing that I did is after the classes, when I was given a homework by my instructor, I did not just do and submit. I tried to explore more in detail and ask my instructor more about all my doubts.

So far, I still do not have any difficulties with my classes. I am doing quite good for a newbie. My instructor encourages me all the time whenever I make the effort to learn more about whatever she teaches.

I would describe my elective posting progress as open and creative.

The plan for next week which is the third week is to learn how to remove background of a portrait picture as well as opening and managing multiple layers in one file.

WEEK 2.
Hello and greetings everyone :)
Painting/Illustrating on iPad

2. How is your progress?

On week two, i learnt more about illustrating on ipad. After learning all of the functions of the many tools in the procreate app, its time to implement all those tools into creating a piece of art. This week i learnt the techniques and skills on how to draw paintings. For example, the textures, the light and shadow direction and also practising to make freehand drawing and sketches. I also learnt about angles of the face, amd how to import fonts into the app. I watched and followed multiple painting tutorials to know the techniques used, the tools needed, and the right and suitable brush used to create and complete a painting. I also started practising to make my own drawing too to prepare for my upcoming project.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Always check the layer menu before drawing! Because you do not want to draw on the wrong layer, because if you do, you need to redraw the whole layer! Have to keep this in mind..

4. Your feelings & thoughts

Making a painting/illustration can be very fun but also challenging at the same time. It requires alot of practice to make a pretty and beautiful painting. Practice makes perfect. So far, it has been a fun journey, i feel very fulfilling and grateful that i got to learn new skills and brush up my drawing skills that I abandoned for a long time since I entered med school 😂

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Adding textures to paintings. It sure makes a lot of difference to a painting, it gives a more paper-like look on the painting and produces more lively paintings and make the paintings pop-out more..

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

Some difficulties that i face was actually making sketches before painting and sometimes drawing on the wrong layer. To overcome this, I made it a habit to always re-check my layer menu before drawing.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Two words would be CHALLENGING and UNWINDING

8.

2. How is your progress?

This week I learned and made a few landscape paintings. I’ve learn to make landscape painting in both impressionism (abstract) and realism.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Points to remember from week 2 are 4Cs in painting landscape. The 4Cs are composition, color, contrast, and character. These are the 4 steps in making landscape painting. First, is to sketch and find the best composition of what we want to paint from reference pictures. Then comes color, I need to prepare the palette of the colors I want to be on the painting. Starting from underpaint of the painting until I work through the color that suits my taste. After that, adding contrast on the painting as in the shadows and complimenting the colors. Lastly, is to add character and highlights to make the painting livelier.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel satisfied whenever im done with a painting and it makes me want to do better the next time. i feel calm doing this project as doing art can also be a therapy to let loose my mind and be absorb in working through the paper.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

One good thing I can practice now is blending the colors really well. I love working on the color and gradient of the skies and seas. Having a neat color blend makes the painting looks more natural and real.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

So far, the difficulty that i encounter is feeling like my painting would not turn out as good as i thought it would be in the middle of my progress. to cope with this, i always tell myself to judge my work only after it is done and that it is okay to make mistakes as i can take that as points to learn and correct them on the next painting.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Passion and patience

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

My plan for week 3 is to learn and create illustrative paintings and also to keep practicing what I have learned before.

2. How is your progress?
On week 2, I have start to paint some illustrative painting in a polaroid sized watercolour paper using the ideas from my sketch and skills learnt from week 1. I also learnt how to paint in an organized manner which is to prepare the colour palette that I'll be using before painting so that I will not spend too much time choosing the colour while painting.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
- Always start with a simple sketch before drawing with fineliner or paint to minimise mistake.

- Always make sure that first layer is completely dry before applying the second layer in watercolour painting.

- Do not overdo the painting.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
- I'm proud of myself that I was able to paint and draw. It might not look good in the first try but it eventually will with practice.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
 - Letting go of perfectionism and focus on progress.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
- I have encounter difficulties when I tried to add volume, dimensions and lighting in my work as I always overdo it and it turns out to be confusing when other people look at my artwork. To solve this, I watch tons of videos on youtube and did my research on google to find the best way that suits me. I also paint and draw repetitiely to improve my skills and realize that I require lesser time to finish it than when I first started. I also find it difficult to do both watercolour painting and drawing with fineliner separately. Thus, I decided to do fineliner drawing with watercolour background.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
- Tough and rewarding

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
- Digitalize my artwork
- Sharing my work in online platform
- Continue to paint and draw.

2. How is your progress?
Week 2 has been progressively good compared to the previous week as I start on sketching and learn to paint with different art medium— which are acrylic paint and watercolour. I watch the tutorial lectures regarding that from Mr Oscar before I tried it by myself.

For sketching, I drew random objects to train myself to observe its shape, texture, lighting and shadow. I personally think that sketching is really important step to carry out out an art project, either painting or illustration. I enjoy this process as I tried to draw an object by segregating it into simple shapes like rectangle, square, circle, cube, cuboid and cylinder. Apart from that, perspective is an important basic while sketching. Thankfully, Procreate has an drawing grid tool (drawing assist) that helps me with that. Directly, making life much easier.

Painting with acrylic paint is not much a problem thanks to the developed program of the acrylic brushes on Procreate which are as good as in real life. And again, we include all the basics that have been taught in the previous lecture.

Contrary to acrylic, I took lot more time to master the handling of the watercolour brush. It was quite challenging for me to be honest. I have the experiences of using watercolour on paper for painting, but it was kind of different on the iPad especially there is only one default watercolour brush in Procreate. So, I downloaded some pack of free brushes from art websites to aid my learning process.

Aside from the lectures, i watched multiple tutorial videos that revolves around acrylic and watercolour painting. They have been convenient and helpful since I find many tips and tricks to make my painting better.

Attached picture above is one of my attemp for watercolour painting based on a tutorial video. It was a two perspective landscape drawing with mixed colour of warm and cool colours selection. I spent quite some times to finish it, from sketching to adding colour that I feel intensified regrets in my head half through the process >< But, I tried my best to do it till the end and I am quite happy to see the final product.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Always remember to draw on the right layer—again.

Try to understand how the object behave by the volume, composition, lighting and colour.

Trust the process!

4. Your feelings & thoughts
Firstly, I am proud that I manage to learn different art medium this week. It was rewarding to see the final product even though the intial process was hard and challenging. I am happy that I don’t give up during the process and continue to believing on myself that I can do it. I am glad that painting brings out the positivity in me.

I want to be more confident on my potential and stop questioning my self-worth. I think having a good self-esteem is really significant to keep me moving forward.

5. 1 good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
Perseverance!

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I have encounter difficulties when I try watercolour paiting as the default brush is not what I expect it to be. It was somehow doesn’t look good on my first try as the colour become dull and desaturated. So I decided to download some packs of free brushes and watercolour canvas that available on art websites.

I am still continously practicing the basic as I sometimes make random error with the lighting and depth in my work.

7. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Patient and perseverance

8. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

Learn inking, illustration to line

Producing painting and drawing, prepare them to share it on Instagram.
