Proper Ways to Hold a Baby: Supporting Infant Development

1. Newborns (0-3 Months)

Always Support the Head & Neck – Newborns have weak neck muscles and can't hold up their heads.

Cradle Hold – One arm supports the baby's head and neck, the other supports their bottom.

Shoulder Hold – Hold baby upright against your shoulder, supporting their head and neck with one hand.

2. When to Stop Supporting the Neck (Around 3-4 Months)

By 3-4 months, most babies start holding their heads up.

Signs they're ready: Lifting their head during tummy time, turning their head smoothly, or holding their head steady while being carried.

Still, support their head when picking up or laying them down.

3. Holding a Baby with More Neck Control (4-6 Months)

Lap Support Hold – Baby sits on your lap with support around their chest and back.

Hip Carry – Once baby has full neck control (around 6 months), you can carry them on your hip with one arm for support.

4. Holding Older Infants & Toddlers (6+ Months)

Hip Hold – Helps distribute weight while letting baby look around.

Front-facing Hold – Lets baby explore while feeling secure.

Back Carry (with a Carrier or Sling) – Great for keeping hands free while carrying baby safely.
