For this performance, our decided theme was Latin music. We wanted to create a song that was representative of Latin’s musical traits as well as something you can dance to. On of the main features of our song was in fact the 3/2 clave rhythm, typical of Latin music. The instruments used in our piece were electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals.

The development

One development of the song was that we changed it to use a syncopated rhythm, where both the bass and drums played on the off-beat and the guitar played the chords on the beat. This helped to extend the use of the Latin genre in our song, though it took a lot of practice to get this right.

We also used the 3/2 clave drum pattern throughout to indicate the Latin fusion and show we had used various techniques to help bring across the Latin theme in our song.

We open with the drums playing for 1 bar, and in the second bar we bring in the bass guitar and electric guitar playing staccato notes. The vocals also sing an intro of lyrics starting at the same time as the bass and electric guitar. We then go into the verse, where the drum pattern changes to syncopate along with the bass guitar so the bass plays off-beat. Here, the percussion is also playing the snare using the 'side-stick' technique. The bass is still playing the notes as staccato. During the verse, the electric guitar changes to play a classical Spanish note pattern that you might hear played on a Spanish guitar elsewhere. The bass and drums also work together to establish a 3/2 clave beat between them. The guitar, bass and drums play one more bar of this when the lyrics stop in order to lead into the chorus and differentiate them. In the chorus, the notes played on the bass and electric guitar reverse to change the song up. The drums still play the same pattern as before, and the lyrics change here. After the lyrics to the chorus are repeated twice, there is a break that lasts one bar where the drums hit the hi-hat. The guitar then comes back in with a changed set of notes to play the bridge. The bass follows the guitar, and in the second bar of this the drums play a clearer use of the 3/2 clave. The vocalists clap out the 3/2 clave here to make the song audience-interactive and encourage them to join in. After four bars of this, the guitar, bass and drums change again to play the original chords and pattern used in the verse and chorus. In the second bare of this, the vocals come back in to sing the lyrics of the chorus. We then move into the outro, where the guitar plays another set of chords but using staccato, along with the bass. The lyrics change here and this is played for four bars, and then the lyrics drop out so the drums, bass and guitar play the final notes. The song ends on a drum fill and the last notes of the guitar and bass being held out as legato rather than using staccato.

After our performance, our peers gave us nothing to improve on. In my opinion, the song could have been improved with use of Latin instruments added in to make it more authentic to the genre chosen.

I think that a strength of mine was staying in time with the syncopated rhythm as it can get confusing, as well as driving the song which makes it easy to dance to. In order to improve, I would have liked to look into more of the techniques used in Latin dance music in order to make the part I play even better as a driving force of the song.

All in all, I think that we were successful in displaying our genre in the song we wrote, and that it made a great song to dance to with various features of Latin music found within it.
