The pictures show how the Pony and Johnny run inside when the see the church on fire immediately. Dally stays back, but screams at them while they were going in. Johnny first shows courage by going into the church. He start saving the kids by throwing them out a near by window. After that, he again shows an act of heroism by shoving Pony out the window cause he was on fire and Johnny wanted to save him, and was completely selfless. The author wrote that he was having the time of his life, and it shows that Johnny liked being the hero and not the victim.  Johnny was brave enough to be the hero, and also go through the hard times as the victim.
