Founded between 479-551 B.C.E, Confucianism was created by Confucius. The philosopher's actual name was King Fuzi and was born in China. Confucius grew up in the Shang Dynasty. Seeing the Dynasty fall, he created Confucianism to create a sturdier empire.
King Fuzi's philosophy was "Everyone was born good and pure. It was the surroundings that made people want to cause harm." Confucianism does not have any higher powers in their religion. Confucianism was based on humanistic ideas. This religion also created the idea of "Yin and Yang." Ying is supposed to represent the darkness in the world. The Yang is a symbol of more positive aspects in life. The message of Yin and Yang is to show that in order to be happy you must have a balance between the two. The way to show these ideas involved five important relationships. The first four were
friend and friend
Parent and Child
Husband and wife
elder sibling and younger sibling
Each relationship had a purpose or "Li". Member #1 must be wise and be a sign of hope for member #2 in the relationship. Member #2 must respect them and look up to them for advice.
The fifth relationship is "Ruler and Subject." Along with the responsibilities of the first four, member #1 must be a symbol of power and protect member #2.
What determined who would be member #1 and member #2 was based off of gender and age. For the first relationship (parent and child) the parent was member#1 and the child was #2. However, if their was no father figure, the mother and to respect her son. For the second relationship (Husband and wife) the husband was member #1 and the wife was member #2. For the third relationship (elder sibling and younger sibling) the eldest was member #1 and the youngest sibling was member #2. In this relationship, gender was not a defining factor. Even if the eldest sibling was a female and the youngest was a male, the female would still be the first member. For the fifth relationship (Ruler and subject) the ruler is member #1 and the subject is member #2.
For friend and friend, this one is a little more complicated. Some historians believe that this was an equal friendship. However, some say that is was not an equal relationship and that the eldest friend was the member#1 and the youngest friend was member #2.
Confucianism was the definition of gender roles. Women were at the bottom of the food chain. Women had to talk and act a certain way in society. An example that would be looked down upon in Confucianism is abortion. In higher classes, aristocratic men would have multiple wives. Each wife was separated from her husband. Women were raised to respect any male figure. When they were children, the had to respect their father. When they were married, they had to respect their husband. If a woman was a widow, she had to respect her son. It was believed that a woman shall never live a day without looking up to a man.
As far as sexuality, if a person was found to be a homosexual, there would be physical punishment such as getting your hands chopped off.
Confucianism also has a sacred text called "The Five Classics." This text was supposed to describe the most important teachings in Confucianism.
