They called it balance states.
If one state was a slave state than another had to be a free state. This caused on conflict between the states.

The South wanted slaves and the North didn't. This led to disagreements on many more things like tariffs and taxes. Which ended up becoming a war against each other.

They didn't need slaves for labor. They had an organized states and they didn't need help from slaves to do their neighbor.
